raptor vs raptor x

Might be a somewhat stupid question but whats the difference (except the clear top to "see into the inner workings and witness the drive in action", no comment)?
Raptor

Raptor X

Besides the clear cover, the Raptor X is generally more expensive, not sure why a B-Grade ADFD would be more expensive than a new OEM AHFD though.

The MTBF (mean time between failures) of the Raptor X is also half that of the standard model.

sorry to sound thick, but what does mean time between failurses mean? basically is it that the X can break before the std Raptor?

sorry to sound thick

The MTBFs are done on a model by model basis so you'll have to trawl through the manufacturer's sites and hope they've published them/made them easy to find. Failing that places like Storage Review are pretty good but it's a bit hit or miss as to whether they'll publish the MTBF as part of a review.

Bearing in mind though the MTBF is half a million hours on the Raptor X so it's not exactly short. ;)

Very true, it should outlast most peoples use of any drive but it would still seem to be a bit pointless getting a drive with a clear plastic window if you don't have a case with a side panel at least plus it is (statistically) more likely to fail. That said I doubt it would put me off buying one but then I've got Maxtors at the moment. :)

even with a windowed side panel, most cases just arnt set up for people looking in having a clear view of the top of the HDD, in most cases it will be obstructed by the case/wires etc... which will make the drive basicaly a more expensive and a shorter lifespan drive then a non clear cover raptor.

then again, there are some cases where a raptor x would like nice, but as i said, for the most part its just a waste of money as it proberly wont be visible.
