Raptor 74gig, 8/16 meg cache

Jabbs:

I would think so (although I may be disagreed with) , certainly in the "Average read" (in HDTach) you would, which I think would translate into a real life usage increase.

I have 2 x 74GB, 8MB cache Raptors and I would certainly buy the newer 16MB cache version over the 8MB cache, even with the newer being a bit more expensive. :)

I don't mind paying the extra if its going to show some rewards, but if its hardly noticeable might aswell get the cheaper version.

It most definitely is faster - not for the cache but for the improvements made. The 74GB Raptor 16MB cache is faster than the 150GB raptor which wiped the floor basically with the older 74GB raptor.

You can generally apply any improvements of the 150GB Raptor over the 74GB old model to the new 74GB model as well. In other words,

(WD1500ADFD=WD740ADFD) > WD740GD

Went for the 16 meg cache 74 gig in the end, goto say its nice to have a raptor again, my baracuda 7200rpm sata hd is well slow compared, nice to have abit of speed back.
