Raptor gets really hot.

Ive got my OS on a partitioned 150gb raptor and its idle temp is about 51° assuming that the sensors in the mobo are correct. Is that ok for a HDD? Or should I consider getting better cooling? Its at 35° and slowly going up after being on for about 10 minutes.

I'm using Everest Ultimate for my temperature readings.

It's hot, but not fatally so. Worth trying to get more air round it if you can, these drives are not hot running and getting it below 40 should be easy.

Is it near a fan or vent? Just moving it so its in the path of airflow will improve it. What case/cooling do you have and where is the hard drive placed?

Hmm, its because I've wedged it in between another HDD and a CD drive giving it minimal airflow. I'll try and direct a fan at it and see what happens. :)

EDIT:

Yup, jsut directed the case fan at it with one side open temp dropped to 42 on the raptor, 40 on the caviar and cpu is idle at 46.

Thats compared to 58 degrees it was before - ouch. I need to get the air circulating in and out of the case.

My 74gb raptor used to run at about 35 under load most of the time till it was taken out and now sits on the shelf :). So yours sounds a little high but as i havn't had a 150 maybe there is something different to warrant the extra heat.

i'd move it next to the intake fan, as that temp is high even for a raptor. mines @ 33deg and has been on for ~8/9 hours, so that is extreamly high temps

mine is next to the intake fan at the front of the antec 1200 (the only place you can have it) and the fan speed is set to low and my HDD temp is at a nice cool 20'C if its at 50'C id be very worried if i were you.
Use HDTune to get a more precise temp reading.
