Raptor Lake microcode updates vs bios settings

So it's been a while since the Raptor lake debacle that led to several CPU microcode and motherboard bios updates.

I ended up with the impression the microcode updates fixed the real issue. The bios updates and Intel performance/extreme profiles were to reduce the number of returns under warranty if too late for the microcode updates alone.

Hence, thoughts re returning to original motherboard settings before the nightmare began ?. I.e in my case 'Asus advanced OC profile' that seems to simply increase limits. I have temperature limits enabled as always and never overclocked the cpu.

Buildzoid looked into this and I don't think the fixes are as "baked-in" as you might imagine if you don't use the new profiles, though it may depend on the board.

Many of the Intels chips are simply going to fail prematurely regardless. Even in a reduced state, Intel have still pushed their silicon way outside of their design brief and they suffer fundamental materials quality issues that no amount of software provisioning can solve. Cobbling together a bunch of Skylake and Atom CPUs and pushing the chip to within an inch of it’s existence is just a terrible strategy.

I think the goal of these updates* are three fold. To increase the MTFB, mask instabilities and to nurse as many chips though their warranty periods as possible. The good news is, Intel seem to be running out of warranty replacements and people are now receiving refunds or 200 series chips and compensation which should finally bring this saga to an end.
