raptor question

hi, i have a 36gb raptor i have in my sons computer,that wont let me reinstall windows
it get to the bit where the comp reboots and is supposed to complete the installation but just shows a blue screen with a mouse pointer. i can move the mouse around but it stays like this.
does this mean the drive is kaput? for a while now the computer has been slow, but i put this down to a 2 year old xp install which prompted the reinstall.
i tried a different drive and it installed ok
any ideas?

What Mobo and what OS (as you need SATA Drivers if XP-SP1), XP-SP2 supports many SATA Controlers but not Silicon Image (example).

cheers, its a gigabyte board (ga 8i848 pm, scavanged from a fs scaleo p) and xp sp2.
i have used other sata drives on this board with no probs so i dont know if its the drive, has any one else experienced anything similar?
