Raptor X in RAID advice

Hi,

Ive just aquired a second Raptor X 150gb for free to co-exist with my current drive so Im looking at setting up some form of RAID on the system to run these from. However my RaptorX currently holds all my system data which I dont want to loose in a format, so heres my questions ...

1. Whats the 'fastest' RAID setup? I only need 150gb of space so the second drive is purely for 'speed'

2. Is there a way to set the drives into the RAID recommended in 1 so that I dont loose data? ghost image? then reassign? will this work from a non RAID to a RAID?

Any advice welcome

Many thanks
Mike

P.S My specs are in my signature below

If you want speed then it's RAID0 so you'll get 300Gb or so of useable space.

The simplest way to setup RAID is to do a full reinstall after creating the array in the BIOS. You might be able to persuade Windows to install the correct drivers into your current install and then image it onto the array but it's far from guaranteed to work whereas a full reinstall is.

Hi,

Ok so taking my current harddrive setup which I have is

2x WD RaptorX 150gb (currently holding WinXP)
1x 120gb Seagate Barracuda (currently holding Vista)
1x 500gb Seagate Barracuda (currently 80% full of mp3's)

What would you recommend in terms of setup for ultimate performance? Maybe something like ...

2x 150gb Raptor X in RAID 0 holding operating system + ???
1x 120gb Barracuda ???
1x 500gb Barracuda holding MP3 files

Any other ideas? would games be faster off the raptor raid setup? and keep more generic applications on the 120gb such as office?

Help
Mike

well if you are going to have 300gb of space then put all your games and apps and the OS on the 2x raptors. then use the 500gb drive for things like documents, pictures and songs. then use the 120gb for backing up impportant stuff as RAID0 does increase the failure rate.

os and games on the raptors, programs which dont need fast loading times like office + documents etc on the 120 and 500gb drives, and also backup important data to the 120 and 500gb's.

I didn't know that. In fact there's a lot i don't know lol!

I have a similar question, so i thought i'd ad it here if the OP doesn't mind (rather than create a whole new thread)...

I currently have 2 160gb Seagate Barracuda 7200.10's set in RAID0, for operating system and programs. I've also ordered a 500gb Hitachi drive (it was cheap :D ), which will be for all files, downloads etc... And i plan to get another 500gb for backing up the Hitachi (haven't worked that out yet, but hey..I'm sure there's a decent program out there somewhere lol!).

What i was wondering is how to set the 500's in the BIOS, and which SATA ports to use on the mobo (5 & 6 ok?)!?! I currently have my RAID0 using 1 & 2, a SATA DVDRW using 3, and a SATA port on the front of my case using 4. Both the 500's will be SATA drives btw.

Cheers
