ok just want which you would go for out of these 2 options, we are assuming there is data storage in another drive and that this is purely for operating system, games and applications. Would you go for:

2x 200gb seagate 7200.10 in raid 0 (400gb total)

OR

2x 74gb raptor 10k 16mb in raid 0 (148gb total)

So backup storage isnt an issue, just assume there is a massive drive in addition to these that takes care of it

good points for 7200.10:
more storage
cost
less noise

good points for raptor:
seek speed increase
cant think of any other but thats an important good point

oh i realise theres been threads about this already but im limiting you to those 2 options to pick from. No single drive option, no 3rd drive type option. Pick 1 of those 2 in raid! assume both can be afforded but obviously less cost is a factor. Also intrested to see whether people think 148gb will be enough for o.s/games etc for the future and not just today. Today we have o.s taking up a few gig and games the same, but that looks like its changing but just how much is the question, enough to warrent the 7200.10 drives perhaps?

oh also assume this is for a heavy gaming machine and not just for apps etc

I would certainly go for the Raptors. They're like sugar off a shovel and they're not noisy all the time :)

Two of these in RAID will be faster at loading windows, maps in games, transferring files etc etc than 7200.10's, even though these are also fantastic drives.

do you think 148gb is gonna still be enough for games and vista in like 2 years time? i dont install 'that' many games but i wanna have space for a good few. supreme commander for e.g is gonna take up 10gb which i just got the other day. On the other hand dont know if all games are gonna start being like that

Games will get bigger and bigger, but it's like anything, you go by your means. I.e., if you have 150Gb available you simply uninstall what you're not playing and retain the settings and save game files :)

I'd certainly say 150Gb will be plenty for Vista / Office / Program Files and games for a few years, yes. But, I can never imgaine having more than about 8 games installed at any one time.

so you would say that 400gb is an unnessesary amount to use in a raid 0 setup for o.s/games then? obviously its all the non essential but wanting to run fast stuff on this drive and just really trying to decide whether 150 is enough for that or not. Seems like raptors are what im hearing as the winners sofar

I would definately have the raptors, i have two (old now) 74gb 8mb cache in raid 0 atm and with xp, all my programs and about 10 games installed i have 80gb free.

if you are worried about space get the 2x 150gb raptors, bit more money but well worth it.
Also i hear the bigger the drive (GB wise) the less movement the motors need make because the density of the drive is much greater so permormance is even better in the 150's.

Or buy 3x Raptors (proberbly 74GB in this scenario unless money is no object) and RAID 0 the 3 drives, even bigger boost.
