Hey,

Ive been thinking about getting a new hard drive cause im running out of space.

I have seen people talk about raptors, but how good are they?

Whats better about them than normal HDs etc?

I just want some thoughts and facts about them please.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,

Although never owned a Raptor myself (I'm a 7200 guy!) I do believe they run quicker at 10,000rpm ergo have super fast access times.

When I look at system spec ups with Raptors, people tend to have one or two Raptors purely for boot and install, and then a handful of 7200's for mass storage.

Hope this helps somewhat,
John
:)

As above the seek times are faster and the average tranfer rate is a bit faster.
Personally speaking i'd say get a 320GiB Seagate as theyre probably the fastest of the 7200 drives and have transfer rates approaching that of the raptors, and are a vitually silent whereas the raptors you will hear.

Like quite a few folk here i have both the above :) The Raptors are great and so are the Seagates, just ones somewhat cheaper and bigger than the other.

They are so much more expensive than the 7200rpm drives it's only worth it if you're a real power user. However Raptors especially in RAID 0 are awesome at loading things - you pays your money you takes your choice.
