yeah but if he is upgrading, the se would let him get another 4870, and if he wants to upgrade even later on then i bet that with the speed of tech these days that would call for a new motherboard anyway

Get a decent motherboard and it should last you a good while. My P5E X38 board has had a 8800GTS 640mb, 8800GT, 8800 ultra, 260 GTX and at the moment a 280GTX, so in the space of 5 video cards i'm still on the same board and it's still going strong.

so the asus se will let him pop any single or dual Ati cards in for the life of the board
