Rather Annoying

I have a MK 4 TDi Golf.

When cold it makes a rather annoying 'squeaky' type noise, after further investigation, the noise is coming from the drive/alternator belt - but once it warms up, the noise dissapears.

Has this happended to anyone else? I've just ordered some belt dressing, which apparently helps sort the issue out. I'm just a little concerned though that it could be a bigger issue than just the fact it's cold, like an issue with pulley's etc..

P.S. Yes, I do know this is mechanics forum but thought I'd ask to see if anyone else has experienced something similar. Ta.

Don't just slap belt dressing on it, you're only masking a potentially bigger problem (tensioner/water pump etc). Get it looked at properly.

Are you asking if anyone ever has experience of a slipping belt? I would imagine upwards of 50% of the members forum could quite happily sign on that line.

Best thing to do, replace the belt and ideally tensioners.

Get an estimate on price before they do the work. It has the potential to be a big bill. Water pump + belt generally get changed at the same time on these engines. Similar lifespans I guess but expensive all the same.
