Rather obvious question

Hi guys.

I'm currently running a 3770K @ 4.4ghz with Kingston Value RAM - (2x8gb, 1600mhz, 11-11-11-27, non-xmp, 1.5v). GPU is GTX670 @ 1320mhz, using twin Hyper3K SSDs in RAID0 for Windows and applications.

Now, I'm guessing there's no point overclocking that RAM. I mainly do web browsing, gaming, programming and a little bit of Photoshop but not a great deal. I do tend to have a lot of things running at a time though.

Would I notice much if any difference from getting some faster memory? Was eying up some Patriot Viper Black Mamba 2133mhz stuff that I could run at 2400mhz.

I've never really bothered going for fast RAM, but most of my other components are quick so I wondered if this was a bottleneck at all.

The only thing that's put me off getting it is that I'd have to fill my RAM slots to get 16gb. Would I really notice the difference then?

Do you need 16gb, are you running virtual machines, or working with large photo files or heavy encoding. If gaming is the main use, 16gb is overkill. I tried 16gb, im mainly a gamer. Wasnt needed tbh, same when i went from 6-12gb in my old x58 rig.

Conversely I edit multiple large image files and merge them or make big 3D models etcetera and I quite frequently find that I am running out of memory

I will be upgrading to 24GB soon, which will last me the life of the machine and possibly the next one.

For gaming 8GB is plenty.

I do run virtual machines fairly often and I use a RAM disk so I do need more than 8gb really.

I used to just run 8gb but I did fill it up with the amount of stuff I run at once .

I don't mind paying for 16gb of Samsung Green if that's the way to go... I was just wondering about the performance/stability hit of filling my RAM slots.

THe only thing that will give you a measurable speed boost is an SSD

As I said in my first post mate I'm using twin SSDs in RAID0, currently get around 1000mB/s read/write. Very glad I switched from HDD

if your currently being slowed down by the ram running out then yea buy some more ram and you may aswell get a slightly faster speed. 1600mhz is the best spot, 1866mhz is decent too

I think the general consensus is that you won't see much real world benefit outside of benchmarking, but if you want to make the inside of your PC look nicer and you have money to burn, then why not!

I have been eyeing up the 16GB Geil Veloce Arctic White 2400MHz kit for a while, but I don't have money to burn on such lavish RAM

Don't think even OCd sandy/ivy bridge see much gain with faster RAM.

So, not worth upgrading for me then? I wondered if the high latency but average speed of mine was a bad thing. I basically just went out and bought the cheapest memory Kingston made .
