Earlier this week I decided to go to OcUK to pick up some new headphones, my sony mr-v700's are getting a bit long in the tooth and I wanted something good for games and would hold up as great gaming/entertainment speakers at the various lans I go to.

Here is a picture of them to give you an idea:

So I walked in bought them, drove home and opened them up, was very impressed with the packaging. I carefully took them out and plugged them into the back of my xfi elite pro.

First thing i did was change from 7.1 speakers to 5.1 and spend some time tweaking the settings in the xfi control panel as I had read they are not great without tweaking, first thing i discovered was the incorrect wiring of the speakers, when i tested the centre speaker, the sound came out the rear left, and vice-versa. That was a quick fix, however I did notice at this stage the front and centre speakers were overpowering and the rear drivers rather weak.
Never mind I though, time for some games, I fired up CSS and jumped straight into a game.
WOW. I was blown back at the new environment I felt like I was in, everything was very precise, however about 1 minute into the first round i noticed that any sound that came from behind me (out of the rear speakers) was very weak and quiet. Some more adjusting and it was a bit better but there was still the problem of an M3 manual shotgun right behind me sounding like a potato gun.
I moved across to a few other games; FEAR, COD2, BF2142 and DOD:S, all of them were fantastic with these headphones. Sound reproduction of people, grenades and guns were very precise and realistic and of good quality.
That's where my good times came to a sudden halt, I fired up a few more games. Dirt, NFS:C, SupCom, GTR1/2 and UT2K4. I wash shocked at how horrible it sounded, sounds were not clear or full, they were tinny, irritating. Things that came out of the sub and the rear speakers were quite frankly pathetic sounds and extremely poor in quality.
To be 100% sure I did the exact same tracks and maps with my hp1's and my v700's. The v700's were miles better, everything was crisp, full and were not lacking at all.
'OK', I thought, 'these are 5.1 headphones after all, not designed for this'

Moving out of games and onto films and music, I fired up a DVD of Hot Fuzz and watched the same 3 5 minute clips with both headphones. The hp1's were muffled, tinny and felt like I was using a set of headphones you can pick up from computer stores for about 50p. Music was the same, nothing was defined and some songs sounded horrible on the hp1's.

Finally I tested VoIP, I opened a convosation on skype with a friend and asked him how I sounded, he said I sounded like i was shouting to him through a brick wall. I checked all the settings and even moved onto another PC but the same problem. I plugged my el-cheapo Plantronics 60 headset in and he said it was perfect again.

In conclusion, these headphones are ****ing expensive, they are advertised as gaming headphones, they do a fantastic job in CSS, DOD:S and COD2 but they are absolutely rubbish for everything else.
If you own a high quality set of headphones, moving to these will be unbearable. I already have a set of good headphones and a good quality 7.1 speaker set so will not be keeping these expensive headphones.

I managed to get my hands on a set of these today:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-022-SN&groupid=702&catid=22&subcat=502

They are in the same league as my v700's and miles better than the hp's for games and voip, they cost half as much as well.

I am disappointed with the HP-1's, I am a fan of razer and have had two copperheads but that was because the first one died. Which moves me onto my final point, on looking for a solution to the crap mic to see if it was a DOA problem I discovered 7 pages of poor reviews of the HP-1's on a very large American hardware retailers site, some last for a long time other break after a week to a month of use. The speakers eventually die and the volume dial on the control pod suffers poor left/right balance after a while. To say the build quality of the headphones is not great is a major understatement.

Overall, if your a gamer, avoid this product like the plague, get a decent set of stereo speakers and mic from a good brand like sennheiser. It will save you money, pain and your ears will thank you.

Hope this is of some use to gamers on the lookout for headphones and If any other hp1 owners would like to add to this thread that would be great. I'm not here to bash these headphones, just pass on my experience to other gamers alike. :)

I have to thank you for two points here-
firstly, I was considering those, so cheers for telling me not to.
Secondly, thank you for recommending me those Sennheisers - I think I will get those for gaming.

Thank you. This has helped me a lot.

So you would suggest using speakers + mic instead of a headset with a built in mic?

I don't want to be constantly thinking i have to sit infornt of the mic for people to hear me? I'd much rather have a comfortable headset

I don't know much about headsets and mics/speakers, i currently have a set of kinda old creative inspire 5.1 speakers with on-board sound, but was thinking of getting an x-fi soundcard and a headset for gaming, i've read a lot of reviews but the majority fail after a while eg. speedlink medusa etc..

Any headset recommendations ppl?

I have always found sennheisers to be lacking a bit in bass
dare i say it but the hd485's are great.
If i wanted a gaming headset i'd still rather go for dedicated headphones
and a clip on mic or even desktop mic.
It's not like you talk all the time whilst gaming + most people i know including me
deactivate voip as most voices are either #1 sqeaky high pitched and annoying
#2 crackly and hurt your ears #3 just an incomprehensible noise
#4 people that think voip is for them to mc and dj on.

I use skype/personal teamspeak server so in game voip is disabled for me, I spend allot of game time working as a team with my mates, so a mic is essential. :)

I have been eyeing up the HD595's with a HSP4 mic though...

i do not agree with your post at all lay-z.

mine sound bloody brilliant in absolutely everything, no flimsy headphones, no muffled sounds nothing, i think razer are really having some bad batches with these headphones, but my current pair are stonking.

What other (high quality) headphones have you tried?

If most of them are supplied with the mic broken, low quality speakers, a control pod that degrades over time but yours isn't then that's great for you but it means that it's not worth recommending them to anyone else. 7 long pages of moaning customers can't be wrong and most people want to buy a product that works first time round, not something that has to be rma'd a few times before they get a good one like you are claiming to have. :)

what other high end headphones have i used, hundreds ive been in studios working all my life.

ive gone through beyerdynamics, sennheisers, sony, ive tried loads of gaming headsets too, such as icemats, planatronics, sennheiser, small company name headphones.

You name it, my razers though are perfect for my gaming needs, and listening to music, remember how many thousands of people there are in the gaming world, i did in fact read a ton of crap reviews on the HP-1s, but there was enough good ones to balance it out.

i dont know. maybe i was really lucky with me HP-1's? if they were crap id admit it, and buy some new ones straight away. but i havent. a lot of people said the icemat siberias are really good, bass wise i thought they were overpowering, personal preference.

Well then its unfortunate that so many of them are made to a poor quality then.

I wanted to like them but at £95 I expect them to be pretty darn good headphones, if they were around the same price as the medusa's etc. then I would defiantly keep them for css use at lans.

You have convinced me to try another pair I would like to as well, this time I'm going to bring my laptop in the car so i can test them in the ocuk carpark :D

ive seen so many people slating them, but i look at mine and think wtf? mine are really sturdy.

really crisp sounding, i tested my mic too just, to see what i did sound like, and its crystal clear.

so im wondering if a lot are really crap batch.

Razer Barracuda HP-1 Gaming Headset

£95.12 inc VAT

Never heard of these before but I must say they look nice!

I'm gonna have a good read up on gaming headsets as they are useful if you like to game late at night where your neighbours may not appreciate being woken up to the sound of a frag-grenade etc! :D

theres a lot of reviews on these saying there awful etc, some people love them to bits, some people wonder why they wasted there money etc.

mine as stated are fine.

I quite like mine, I had no problems at all the microphone can be a bit quiet but just takes a bit of tweaking. They are hugely overpriced if anything I would go for the SteelSeries 5H v2 headset which I wish I did they seem just as good for half the price but only for the price. But I don't even game on my pc any more xbox 360 and the TV speakers do me fine :D.

One thing, you have to be careful with the volume controller as if you keep dropping it the wire will come out. This is the only thing I have herd bad about the HP1's.

i got a pair of these and the mic picks up all the sounds from the headset have tried on board and with a soundcard so we no its not that, unplugged the mic from the headset and plugged into the back of the pc and cuts all background sound ie in game noises or films whilst using teamspeak.

apart from that the sound i think is great its just the mic seems to sensitive to me

.

Are you running them through an amp or your soundcard?

I have to agree with lay-z-boy on the Razer headphones from what I have heard, great for games but terrible for everything else. Mic wasn't too bad on the pair I used though.

The HD485 are basshead headphones to begin with, moreso when they are broken in.

I got the HD555 to replace the 485 and the bass is less bassy on the 555 but it's way more refined and detailed. Bass does not distort the midrange either like they did on the HD485 (when you listen closely)

The HD555 are £52~ on a particular site and there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to have to need to pay more money for headphones such as the Razer.

The 555 retails at around £75 everywhere else too.

Have to agree with the OP - the Mic is appauling. after a couple of weeks swapping email with Razer support they agree there is a design fault. The last reply to me from Razer below:

Hi there,

As mentioned previously, we do understand that the headphones were designed with mic that were too short.
We will learn and make the needed design changes IF new headphones were to be released.

We have referred to the person in charge for their immediate attention.

Thank you.

Ha, even razer admit the mic is **** :D

Will be taking them back to ocuk tomorrow, will probably end up buying the pc166's and the HD595's though.

Anyone have any experience with Steelsound H5 V2? I usually stay up a bit late on a weekend and was thinking of getting a pair of headphones so I won't wake up the family (plus once I replace my cracked BF2 CD, the mic will come in handy). I will also use it to watch DVDs and apparently that's where these come short, just wondering how bad it is, I'm not sound guru (having had the same 2 creative speakers for the last 5 years) so if it's nothing major than it's probably a go. Also any other suggestions are welcome for sub £50 headsets.
