RBS vs Santander

Looks like a scam; haven't heard anything about a takeover and I opened an account with Santander just last week. Or is it a certain part/account types of Santander?

Nope - definitely accurate - I wouldn't expect any change to your Santander circumstances :)

As for lack of information do you not read/watch the news?

Generally no, I have a 50" plasma but it's not connected to an aerial and I don't have a tv license.

But then... it shouldn't be up to the news to inform me my bank account is changing hands

My Natwest account has been doing the same recently.
I got a letter about the Santander thing a couple years back I think...

Should my Natwest online banking site NOT be doing this?

Also had about 5 billion "changes to the T&Cs" emails.

No, it's safe & legitimate... just appears to be a badly bodged new site. It worried me til I found out what was really going on & confirmed the new site was real.

It feels like my information has been sold rather than the more rational explanation above, hence the up-roar.

Your information has not been sold and there is nothing iffy going on, you can either stick with Santander or open a new account with RBS.

Also you would have been sent stuff telling you about it, just because you didn't receive them doesn't mean they weren't sent. Yes it sucks but that is the way it works.

You wouldn't have heard anything about it directly from Santander because it doesn't concern you in any way, it only effects RBS customers whose account was held at one of the purchased branches.

I had this on Sunday and phoned them up to confirm what was going on. It was, yes, a computer glitch due to them trying to implement the required changes (obviously never heard of the test/test/test mantra of IT!).

Have a read of http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/ne...d-natwest-customers-in-santander-switch-alert as it discusses what's happening.

There is no need to open a new RBS account as you can keep your existing account, as I'm doing, by calling the number in the link. In essence, they say that "yes you can stay with RBS however your branch will now be located in Scotland" however they haven't yet made for provisions of the 1.8 million customers who still bank in the UK but its expected to happen prior to completion of the deal.

If you want to proceed, they read a slight legal blurb (saying that they cannot coerce you into moving or staying etc) and they send you a branch transfer form. Fill it out, send it back and your account will move to Scotland meaning only a sort code change.

I just opened a new account with them but due to the takeover what i've done is although going in to the english branch, I've opened the account in Scotland, which means it will stay RBS and most importantly all my accounts will still be with the same person in terms of online banking. Was no point having a business account with someone different.

Plus in terms of the odd cheque etc, all you do is go into Natwest and treat it like you would your old RBS, and they will do everything for you, you used to get.

Santander took over 314 RBS branches & will rebrand them.

A lot of customers have been changing accounts due to the worries of Santander & the euro problems.

I already have to go to Milton Keynes to pay in a cheque... would be interesting having to travel to Glasgow instead, lol!

I'm happy to see what Santander will be like & there's a branch in L Buzz I believe, which could be quite useful while I'm still stuck here.

I'm also in the position where my accounts have been switched to Santander.

I got letters informing me that this was going to happen, and that a select number of branches would be moving. I then got sent a list of all the branches that were being sold and informed that the one I use was one of them... then loads of letters about how nothing really would change.

Skip to Monday where I got a letter about how the phone number and web address were now changed.

So god knows how you've not heard about any of the changes
Don't think I could have been any more informed.

Quick question. I'm with Santander but is there a better bank to go with?

No idea about banks and by 'better' I mean less scummy practices, hidden charges etc..

What hidden charges?

No banks have hidden charges... you only incur them if you can't manage your money successfully.

Most banks even offer a 24 hour grace period now, I believe?

I changed to the Coop, and looked at First Direct, their the best two from the customer service perspective. The Coop is even somewhat ethical. I dont trust Santander at all, just let them get bigger that'll work.

jeeze - if you're that worried then switch your account - not exactly hard...

if in England - switch to Natwest

if in Scotland - switch to RBS

I will not be sticking with santander.

Simply for the fact they have notoriously bad customer service.

As soon as i get a little time i will be switching.

Yes Nationwide excellent service - also use their CC. I had a £10.500 odd Isa with Santander (arrived at when they took over Alliance and Leicester) I then tried moving this to Nationwide It took them around 6 weeks innumerable telephone calls ( those nice - for them 0845 numbers) and visits to the bank branches - Only my final visit to a branch threatened I was not moving until I received a cheque did something happen. I was told on a Saturday that the cheque would be available for me on the following Thursday however on Wednesday the money had appeared in my Nationwide account. There is absolutely no management in Santander so if one of the tray incompetents that work for Santander ****-up then one is in deep excrement. Naturally I have a case lodged with the Banking Ombudsman but that will take unknown months.
Santander say that they have no offshore call centers - this may be true but if you by chance hit their Call Centre in Leicester then you have all the advantages of an off shore call cnetre without having to get your feet wet! Staffed by exactly the same sort of personages - if you had not experienced it one would not believe it
