The best and easiest idea is to stick a piece of paper between the two gears you want to mesh when you fit them. The paper should be firm but not so tight its difficult to get out.
Indeed.

I usually loosen the engine bolts and adjust until I feel it's touching, I then tighten one bolt and mesh through a doubled piece of paper. If the pattern turns out fine, I tighten the rest of the engine bolts.

Thats what I did on the two spurs I melted at the weekend. Bit of paper, stick it in between the spur and clutch and tighten the engine.

I'll see what the condition of my clutch shoes are and decide I need to go metal with them as well or not.

to finish the completely off topic-ness of this thread.

the cause of the melting spur and usually the stripped spur is the clutch bell overheating, you an sometimes clean the inside of it and replace the clutch but the best option i found was to replace it with a nice vented bell from *bay and the hpi aluminium clutch shoes, never had a problem since. although did notice hpi released a hardened steel spur gear set, but i value my truckzilla too much. strange that im worried so much about a metal spur in my savage yet my hyper 7 has had one for years and never a problem.

im on mb aswell.

even still the only major downside i could find with a metal spur is something jamming it and it destroying the engine, but the same could happen to the hyper but never does.
