RC Cars.

DAMN YOU ALL!!!, now I want to buy another RC car, my last nitro (schumacher havoc) suffered severe neglect (engine rusted, cleaned it up to the best I could but never got round to testing it again) and is now gathering dust in the garage. Also baught a honey bee king rc helicopter on a whim, that I havent learnt to fly yet (they are very fragile and I dont want to break it.)

I am now thinking an electric RC car will be a plug a play affair unlike the nitro and other than charging the battery no maintainence is needed, am I right? Can they be used in the current whether conditions?

i have a losi mini T 1/18th scale with a mamba brushless motor, not tested it yet as it needs a new servo and servo saver, but my mate had one and its fast!
mamba have gotton the same car on standard gearing of upto 70mph!

what about a battery powered RC car??

Are they any faster or as fast as petrol and nitro?

electric can be faster than petrol but then again is all down to gearing for top end or quick accleration.

petrol ones are dirty and a PITA to work with tbh. if its just for fun get a electric one, build it yourself, this way you know how to fix it if it breaks. if your wating speed, go for for a modified motor, just make sure the speedo is the right sort for the turns etc.

go for 1/10th scale touring or buggy of thats your thing. stay clear from the likes of Tamiya, Kyosco (sp), the likes of HPI are entry level compotiton stuff, then the likes of Xray, Losi etc is where the fun starts, adjustable camber/caster etc, oil filled shocks the lot

I have a Traxxas T-Maxx nitro... Playing with the car is great fun but after a crash or just changing a few parts for maintenance is great too.. Getting at all apart just to rebuild maybe just as good as building it in the first place!

Get a car and crash it!! :P

Agreed, excellent piece of kit although the Normal baja can be had for £500 from modelsport on ebay.

I have an FG Monster truck which is a 26cc 2 stroke, the money i saved on fuel last year was about £100 compared to nitro, i also spent a lot less on parts than the year before when i had my savage, so although more expensive to buy they are a lot cheaper to run. :)

Heres my "beast"

have you had a look in WHsmiths for RCMC magazine that used to be good in the old days

LOL, no.

Nitro cars get really expensive to run, and you can get bored of them quite quickly (mine's been sat in the garage for 2 years)

Avoid buying them from places like "gadget" shops, and go to a proper model shop. The people in shops are usually pretty helpful to get you going and offer advice.

I'm into Ntiro R/C Cars. I have a Traxxas Revo (on the left of the pic) which I use for messing around in parks etc, and a Hyper ST (in front of the Revo) which is a Truggy which I use solely for off-road club races.

With regards the Nitro vs Petrol vs Electric argument ;

Nitro (what I use), the fuel is expensive, however the engines are small and powerful for their size. They accellerate faster than petrol, however require lots of tuning, maintenance and TLC.

Petrol : Expensive initial investment in buying a two stroke petrol car (more expensive than nitro), though petrol is cheaper than nitro fuel. No real need for tuning, much more easy to use than nitro engines and far more user friendly. Due to petrol engines being quite large compared to nitro, you can only get larger scale models with petrol engines.

Electric : Obviously being battery powered you have the downside of having limited battery life. If you want an electric car to go as fast as a nitro or petrol version, you have to spend hundreds of pounds on Brushless speed controllers, motors and LIPO batteries and chargers.

All R/C cars fitted with combustion engines still need batteries for the transmitter and receiver, though I can get about an hours run out of my receiver battery before having to recharge and months of use out of my transmitter batteries.

If you can afford it, I would go for a petrol over nitro or electric. My next purchase will definitely be a petrol model.

I think the best thing we can all suggest is, go and find a local Hobby shop that has R/C cars, and ask them to show you a few and the pro's and con's of each type and explain to you in person which each one requires and so on, and then you can work with the guys in the shop and have an idea on what you want, this way you get to see everything upclose and you can decide what you want.

I've always had electric r/c's but i have always wanted an nitro. The only thing that puts me off is how well i'd be able to keep it running. Electric is so much easier to keep running.

The truck is an Emaxx, it's had a lot of work done to it and has been bashed about a lot. One of the first in the country as well :D Any guesses as to what the beetle is? I'm sure a few of the r/c guys will know exactly what it is!

There's some more of my cars, the green one is a Rustler and the buggy is my unfinished Dark Impact. My dads nitro is also up there, a Mardave Maruder from the mid 80's.Still unfinished with the original engine. I've got some more under the bed as well :o
Just realised how many i've got...

I don't really see how you can lump Kyosho in with low level Tamiya kits, they're one of the oldest rc companies with one of the best competition records, eg seven times worlds 1/8 offroad champions.

If you're a beginner then i would definately recommend a tamiya kit. They're pretty much bullet-proof and last for a long time. Spares are really easy to get hold of as well. I haven't had much experience with kyosho stuff, the only one i've had is a lazer zx-r. I think it was the competition version as well. It absolutely flew and it won loads in it's day.

The E-maxx is a beast, one of the best electric monster trucks out there. I have to say that the recently re-released E-maxx (3905) is a beast with plenty of potential to be upgraded to brushless etc.

Is your E-maxx the old model, or the version that was released earlier this year?

It's the old model, got it in january 2001. It's part of the first batch that came into the country and came with the old black speedo instead of the novak one!:D Forward, reverse and no brakes made for pretty interesting driving lol.
I fitted mine with the pro-line suspension kit when that came out, improved the handling no end.

No guesses as to what the beetle is yet? ;)

Dam it!

This thread has re-kindled my want for a Schumacher Rascal. Small truck on massive tyres that looks like excellent fun!

I will resist, as it would only end up not being used.

I've just ordered some xmods for a little dabble into the rc world.... if my mates and i get into them i may progress to nitro racing.

i've found a great sight that sells the starter kits + about £50 of accessories for only £29.99 which is a bargin!

ok there the evolution 1's but that's still worth it for some fun!

Tamiya Sand Scorcher, got one myself along with a few other vintage Tamiyas.

Yay :D It's all original, the only new things are the wheels and tires. My dad bought it new in 1983 from beaties. I've got an xr311 somewhere as well

I've got a xmod supra, they are great fun. They can go crazy speeds if you spend loads of money on them. I'm talking 70-80 mph real speed
