Can you sound experts give me some advice please?

I have an XFi Music Extreme card and a Creative 4.1 set up at present.
I am now doing a fair bit of recording and play guitar through my PC via a LIne 6 Pod XT.
I need some better and bigger speakers that will handle guitars e.t.c. but my question is ...can I still get a surround system as I also use the PC for gaming and Movies? Or would I be better giving up the surround and going for a 2.1 set up?
I don't want a seperate amp or anything and just want to run them off my sound card.

My budget would be upto £300 as I have just spent over £500 on another guitar...the wife was not impressed!

Bear in mind that if you buy a surround system, you will get worse quality speakers than if you buy a stereo system for the same money.

It makes sense really as you're only buying two speakers as opposed to five (plus sub if you're that way inclined).

The surround system would be perfectly capable of playing back your recordings however - and most modern recording software supports surround sound, enabling you to mix for it.

My advice would be to go for the expandable M-Audio LX4 setup:

If you're happy with the 2.1, you can leave it that way - if you want 5.1, you just expand it with this package:

Thanks for the info!

That does sound like a great option. The main problem at the moment is that the small sattelite speakers I have can't handle guitars to well-especially bass! These look very robust!

Codmate has the amp on these M-Audio LX4 speakers got the direct inputs for front, rear, centre for PC gaming.

I seen a lot of hifi systems with 5.1 speakers but they don't have the direct inputs needed for PC gaming.

Hmmm...

Need more info, such as what you want to record...

On reflex - I would suggest something like a Edirol FA-101 (I have one, lots of outs and very versatile) and something semi-appropriate like a Logitech set of 5.1s

I'm not entirely sure what's required - but you can see all the ins and outs in this image :)

...and here's the spec sheet.

It seems the amp has six inputs all together.

They are balanced 1/4" jack inputs, which is nice :)

Much thanks for that..

There no good for me..They have the master volume on the back of the sub box which would make it just about impossible to adjust the volume while gaming etc..

I am running these in my home studio. Very beasty. More powerful versions of te same model are available (8a), but these go loud enough wiht plenty of head room.

they do have volume control on the front, but can be a bit cumersome for small adjustments. The same site will have cheapo mixing desks for doing that. Bear in mind you will need to think baout cabling etc...but Turnkey are pretty cool and will help you with that.
