I've managed to knock off my rear view mirrow. It seems it was glued in place somehow. I've tried using ARALDITE Super Glue and gaffer tape to secure the mirror in place but I may as well but using prit stick. The problem is that there is nowhere I can see to clamp the thing down to allow for the glue to dry, does anyone have any experience/ideas?

special mirror sticky pads you can get from any good car parts shop. Also much more important is ot make sure the screen is completely clean before sticking it, else it will fall off quickly.

firstly GET THE GLUE OFF IT!!!!

glue contracts when it hardens and in many cases this contracting will crack your screen.
use a correct sticky pad obtainable from a dealer or autoparts shop.

Ahh had this happen in my old car, I gave it a little too much punishment.

Easy to fix, I just used some of this stuff. Now it's stuck back on rock steady, and I got it from ebay as the stuff was twice as expensive in the shops.

Clean all surfaces thoroughly
Mount pad to mirror surface heat remove other backing piece then heat gentley then stick to windscreen avoiding touching it for a while
Should be good

Sticky pads, or you can also buy a special glue specifically for this application (made by the same people who make araldite, and sold in halfords) :)

looks good, should I get the glue or the pads? I want it to be a solid contact and minimum of fuss!

edit : on second thoughts, I'll get both :) knowing my luck.

Personally I'd go with the glue I expect it'd be stronger, and if the pads don't stick right I expect you'd end up with a horrible sticky mess that'll be a PITA to scrape off...

or nails. either of the above
o/t there is a product on the market at the moment competing in the same market place as no more nails.
it's called "sticks like ****" and before anyone mentions starring out swearies i can assure you that's exactly how the products name is spelt on the tube/box.

get the one with the glue
the sticky pads are crap
mine came of when the sun got it hot(it went soft)
i went to halfords got the one with glue and gauze
its been fine since

Sticky pads are not suitable for all mirrors, only the ones with a relatively large flat base. Some types have a much smaller metal mounting point (which is separate from the mirror) that has to be bonded to the windscreen using a special adhesive.

If it is supposed to use the sticky pad, then get both the mirror and the screen as clean as possible, using a solvent cleaner such as IPA, or even celluslose thinners. Then warm up both the mirror and the screen using a hair dryer (don't go mad on the screen otherwise you could potentialy crack it, just gently warm up an area around the mounting location. Obviously don't touch any of the freshly cleaned surfaces with your fingers after cleaning them. Correctly fitted the sticky pads work fine, but if fitted to a cold/dirty screen they will fall off very quickly.

Ok I went with the glue and gauss stuff. Attached the mirror yesterday and it stuck ok within a minute so I left it overnight and it's now rock solid. The glue+gauss really does the trick, much better than I expected. I would certainly recommend this way of attaching the mirror if anyone else needed to. :)
