Hi Guys,
haven't been in here for over 3 years :D

you can tell that by my question:

I have an Asus A8N-Sli Premium mobo running a XFX geforce 6800 GS card i want to change my card to something more up to date like 9600gt or 8800 gts along those lines but have been told i will have to change my power supply cos of a 6 pin power connector is this true ? and if is there any way around changing my supply as it an enermax 550watt.

Any help will er helpful :D

thanks in advance

Andy

All you need is a Molex >> PCI-E 6pin adaptor.

Costs a couple of quid tops, or if you ask in the Wanted section some kind soul might have one hanging about spare they don't need.

if you're up to changing your GPU, i'd suggest you just upgrade the PSU so you can power something a little bit beefier, like the 8800GT

that said, that's a s939 board, isn't it? i'd suggest you just build a new PC - you get a lot more power than trying to hold on to s939. What is the rest of your system spec?

hang on now even more confused now can u get a PCI-E 6pin adaptor ????
if so this will have to do for now as can't afford to do a complete upgrade yet......

my system spec was really good in 2005 when i built it :D

You will need to look on your psu to see the rated amperage. There will more than likely be a number of cards available to you without needing to upgrade anything else.

i know this , thanks what i need/want to know is there a Molex >> PCI-E 6pin adaptor taht can use and will it work ??

Andy

should have no problems with an 8800 series card on a 550w enermax, have a 600w enermax noisetaker which used to easily run 2x 7900gt's in sli, the 8800 cards use a bit less power.

thanks i'm thinking of going for Leadtek GeForce 9600 GT Extreme 512MB NOW then doing upgrade bit by bit as funds allows (old disabled git now :D) and then getting another one for SLI....

wouldn't mind recommendations for mobo, cpu, ram and psu if possible

many thanks Andy

If you are upgrading slowly over time, it is best to ask for suggestions when you are ready to upgrade as stuff is always changing/getting cheaper.

That's a bit of a tight budget considering you want to SLI. LGA775 Nvidia chipsets are neither good nor cheap IMO.

i'd go for the 8800gt, its about £130 i think, performance difference between that and a £300 card isn't worth it

you could get a motherboard, cpu & ram & gfx card for £400

Thats 8800gt, ds3l motherboard, 4gb ram, £244inc vat!

now you need a cpu, either get a cheap e21x0 chip and over clock it, or buy a q6600 and over clock that

£50

£150

so thats £395 ish for the quad core, 4gb ram, motherboard and 8800gt

damn good machine..
