Re-chargeable batteries

Ansmann NiMH 2700 + fast charger, that's if your slr takes AA.

had my 2400s for a year now and theyre still going well after thousands of photos.

using sony 2100 and memorex 2400's. both seem to work fine. and about equal on life. so y'know... brand does count for something.

most important things:

NICAD:
(-) lower capacity
(+)they can take faster charging
(+)they can take faster discharging
(+)with a good charger life can stretch to well over 2K charges before notably degraded
(-)some older cells can suffer from "memory effect"
(+)Cheapest cells/chargers

NIMH:
(+) Higher Capacity
(na)Average charge speed
(na)Average/high discharge
(na) good charger can see >1K charges befor they start to degrade
(+) little incidence of "memory effect"
(na) more expensive cells + charger

LiIon:
(+) Highest Capacity
(+) Very Light
(-) Dont abuse them when charging
(-) Dont abuse them discharging
(-) Life span ~500 cycles / 3-5 years whichever comes soonest (from date of manufacture!)
(+) No Memory Effect
(-) Orribly expensive
(-) Very Very Rare
(-) Not all devices can use them
(+)Devices that can will notice - faster flash charging, faster zoom, brighter light (torches - at the expense of bulb life), longer run time, better cold weather performance etcetc

Choice of cell depends on application:

For digicams and most similar items (walkman, desk toys, cordless phones etc) NIMH is best - it will work, its a good price, you will notice the extra capacity

For very high current applications (RC Cars, Cordless Drills etc) NICAD is best - it will work, it will survive

For specialist applications (not excluding high current, eg RC Airplane, Hybrid Cars, Mobile Phones, GPS, Emergency Lights etc) LiIon - where max capacity, low weight, high energy density, cold weather performance, low self discharge

So for your dad, id say nimh. pick a decent brandname, energiser has been recomended above :) and get what suits your budget. a decent charger can make the world of difference!

Energizer 2500mah Advanced with our 15 minute or 1HR compact chargers.

Or Energizer Ultimate Lithium, 630 photos compared to 90 to a standard alkaline. Worlds longest lasting battery and we have patent for lithium batteries for a few more months now. Non rechargeable of course but you will have to buy 4 packs of Duracell ultra plus to get the same performance which weighs in at over 10 pounds, with Ultimate Lithium 4 pack being save 3 pound in Tesco at 3.97 at the moment. This offer nearly up though, maybe a few days max.

It's so nice when you get to speak to people who actually care about getting quality batteries on such a place like this.

Can't tell you how annoying it is, out in the field and some numpty regards Duracell as the best because the TV says so.

Energizer, number one in the rechargeable market and number one in the specialist battery market too.

You shouldn't really be able to buy NICAD any more, companies can no longer produce them due to being hazardous to the environment.

I always get my rechargables from http://www.vapextech.co.uk/acatalog/High_Power_Consumer_Batteries.html and have been very happy with them, both in terms of quality and price.

The last lot I bought were the green "NiMh+" and despite them being slightly lower rated than the highest capacity NiMh, they really do hold their charge for long periods. Helps to avoid those moments when you need a set of charged batteries at short notice, but all your NiMh have lost their charge whilst sat on the shelf for a month or so....

The thing that annoys me of NIMH batteries, is the self discharge if left unused. I had tried them all, GP, Powerex, Energizer, Sanyo but after a couple of weeks unused they would need to be recharged.

So when I heard about the new Hybrid Batteries I had to try them out. The fantastic thing about these batteries is that I can leave the camera unused for months and the batteries still hold their charge.

Have a look here at the link below, they are a kind of hybrid battery between NIMH and Lithuim, and I have been using them in all my flashes and one of my DSLRs with great results. Oh and dont worry about the 2100mah rating, they are much better than the 2700mah they replaced.

Another good battery which uses the same technology is the Sanyo Eneloops, but they are harder to find and cost more too.

Hope these helps.
