Check out the pun! :)

Have had the last couple weeks or so with very little work to do, last week i had zero. So, pulled into directors office just now. Turns out the Engineering industry is in a dry spell and there isn't enough work they can win to keep me going. Out of the four Technicians here, two are senior and one is junior (i.e. sending to college), leaving me, the normal one, the main expendable one.

This will result in reduncancy (the pun! :)), after a fortnight's 'consulting period'. So to the question: Does anyone know what this will involve? Will it look bad on my reference? Would i usually get some sort of financial pay off?

I'm kinda not worried as the industry lacks people at the moment and my skills/experience seems quite transferrable, at worst i'd just go into I.T. (which is what my quals are in).

If you've been in your current role for less than a year you'll get nothing. I think it's 1 week's wages per year you've been working - statutory redundancy pay or something.

You could ask for a really nice reference if they're gonna let you go. 'Consulting Period' is a waste of space. I'd just get looking for new jobs now and tell them (if it's you) that you want time off with no notice to attend interviews etc.

Dam yeh, 9 months. Oh well, i'll still get holiday pay i haven't taken (1/25 taken since new year, so pro rata i'd be looking at 5 days holiday pay i assume) and the days i've worked since last pay day recently.

I'd expect a nice reference to be fair, have been no issues with my work. Well yeh, the director said he hadn't had to do this before so he was wasn't sure, but said it's basically a two weeks notice, giving me time to discuss alternatives within the company and see if they can find projects for me to work on. But i'll get ym CV back up tonight hopefully.

Good idea on the interviews though and makes sense, as it's them who have put me in the situation no fualt of my own, so guess i'm entitled to take whatever time off for interviews. Thanks
