Hi,

Tomorrow i'm going to start re-furbing and respraying the plastic/metal trim on the outside of my car.

I'm guessing the easiest way is to sand it down, spray, then laquer?

When you say re-furb, do you mean restore?

Is it currently black plastic at the moment?

What are you planning on changing it to?

Its faded grey at the moment, I want to update it to phase 2 - black plastic.

I think you need to key the plastic and then use special plastic primer.

How would you 'key' it?

I want a proper job, I don't want the paint flaking off after a few months.

If you rub them down, you will have th get them uber-smooth, otherwise you will have bits textured and other bits smooth.

TBH i would clean them up with meths, then get plastic primer on without rubbing down (unless you want to put the work in) and it should be fine.

Mask off the chrome in the strips.

Matt black should be good enough :)

If the plastic trim was originally black, and it's faded, go and get a blowtorch.

Clean the plastic thoroughly, then quickly wave a blowtorch about 2-3 inches away from the plastic, it will bring the natural oils back out, and restore it's original colour.

Saves a lot of faffing around with paint.

The red inserts (its a 205 gti) come out anyway :) I want them perfect, so i'm prepared to spend a lot of time on them, I don't mine driving around with no trim on for a while.

My aim is to have the car sorted by the RR day :D

It depends what finish you want.

If you want to have them smooth, then rub them down with higher grades then go down to a finer grade of sandpaper until they are 100% smooth, obviously use plastic primer as well.

Satin/Matt Black should give you the factory-black look.

1) Sanding down + cleaning
2) Primer = High build plastic primer to fill plastic texture
3) more sanding
4) desired finish colour, presumably a matte plastic paint.

I want them to look standard, but brand new.

So i should rub them down with varying degrees of sandpaper, then use plastic primer (is this a spray?) then rub down again, then spray with matt black..?

Get some vinyl dye spray paint from Halfords. It is absorbed partly by the plastic so wont peel off and "bends" to a cerain degree before it cracks etc.
Used it on my Astra GTEs plastic trim - worked well.

Will give a standardish finish though.

That would be my suggestion too. Dye it rather than paint it.

Cheers, I'll have a look in Halfords tomorrow, as I'm in Basingstoke getting my exhaust done.

Any ideas on cost?

It's not expensive, maybe £10-15 per can? (not sure how much you want to spray though).

My mate did various bits of his car with it, seemed to hold up pretty well. The only bit that wasn't too good was his steering wheel which he'd dyed as it came off after a few months.

I'd want to spray/dye all the trim down the side, on both sides. Plus the back bumper. IMO the front bumper looks alright colour-coded at the moment :)

vinyl dye is what a lot of people use for monitors, looks really good if done well, done my monitor black and its still going strong except for a few scratches here and there when transporting to and from uni, this would be my suggestion too and the cans are only about a fiver and will probably do both strips imo.

Do a search on 205 GTI Drivers for the posts on this topic by Paintguy. He is a professional sprayer and he used the Halfords stuff for the trim on his topaz. Don't rub it all down you will lose the textured finish and it will take forever. Last time I keyed plastic trim I used wire wool and thinner to remove any old polish/wax etc.
