Good evening folks, firstly this is my first post, woop...

Second, i was hoping some one with a better understanding of OS' could give me a hand in a question i have!

I shall be recieving my new PC monday (From OCuk ;) ) without any OS installed.

I currently have Windows 7 installed on my machine and im hoping to install and use this on my new rig.

Is this possible? in terms of activation with cdkeys etc?

I have read various threads from random forums you can de-activate your current windows install which returns you to the 30day trial i belive, then install it again with the new pc and register that same key?

Anyone have previous experiance doing so? or able to help me a little more with my issue?

Thanks~

If you bought the retail then just install it on the new machine and activate it, your licence agreement means you need to remove it from the old one but you do not need to actually do anything to deactivate it. OEM on the other hand you cannot transfer within the licence agreement.

Welcome to the forums too :)

Where did Windows 7 come from on your old machine?

If it came pre-installed with that computer, or was an upgrade, then you will not be able to install it to your machine [not legally anyway].

If it is a Retail copy, then you can install it on your new machine. However, you must stop using it on your old machine immediately. The best way to do this is to simply uninstall it and put something else on it.

When you come to activate Win7 on your new PC it may fail. In this case you will presented an option to activate over the phone. Follow the prompts on screen and over the phone and in the majority of cases you can activate without actually talking to a real person [you just spend 10 minutes punching in numbers so make sure there are no distractions!].

Sometimes even this will fail, if so you will be put through to an operator. Explain to them that you have a new computer and are installing your retail copy onto it. They should have you sorted in no time.

Thanks for the replys, Im not actually sure what version it is, im using the free iso's given out via the student MSDN.

i cant see anywhere on the website that says they are oem like wise anywhere stating they are retail.

Ahh so you bought a Student copy of Windows 7?

That comes under the Upgrade camp which means the new PC will need to have a previous version of Windows on it before you can install 7. Or you can follow the instructions here: Instructions

It is probably somewhat dubious but it beats installing XP just to install Windows 7 over the top of it. You managed to install it on your last computer so I am guessing you do have a previous version of Windows. That's good enough for me :p

Hi thanks again for the reply,

Well the student copy was free, however its actually an ISO boot disc, and i can upgrade and also perform a fresh install with it.

Before i had W7 i was on a version of vista i couldnt upgrade from, so i had to format and then install W7.

Which leads me to belive the student version my course is giving out are "retail" copies given to the uni to hand out.

However, i cant find any bit of info relating to these iso images/cdkeys being OEM or vise versa.

I just dont want to install windows then try and activate my cdkey on the new machine to find out i cant use it again because i used it on my old one, i would have to cry buckets of tears ;(.

no its MSDN not the student offer OP clearly states that.

So he did! I was skim reading. It's my excuse and I am sticking with it! :p

If it MSDN then I don't see a problem. If it does get to the point where you have to call just tell them the truth. Your old PC was blown up as part of a controlled demolition and you have a new computer. MS are quite trusting and you can't use both at the same time anyway [for long] before you get Genuine Advantage on your case! :p

So in short:

Backup data from OLD PC
Uninstall Windows from OLD PC

Install Windows on NEW PC

Hurray.

I'm sure it will work. I had a Windows Vista upgrade that was labelled upgrae only but clean installed and activated no bother. Also tranferred to my new laptop no bother. I'm willing to go out on a limb and suggest transferring the MSDN will work seeing as it's full media. No mention of OEM anywhere. Microsoft should make this more clear though.

Yeah, i agree, i would be quite easy to list the cdkey type within the computer info window.

Im hoping it will work fine, just wanted to prepare myself for next week, dont want to have to go and buy another OS really :X.

Thanks for the help folks :D

Thanks Daegan,

Im currently using 32 bit on my laptop and 64bit on desktop, but yes ive not seen anywhere online that says the MSDN iso images/keys are OEM etc, so hopefully im all good provided i go through the phone service if problems arise etc.

Thanks again~
