Lovely Wolver-ampton!
to try and get my cd/dvd drive working again im going to format and reinstall, seeing as it *was*working without a problem.

so i dont screw anything up can i check some settings with you guys?

in the bios i need to select raid/ide but not use the gigabyte onboard, and use the orange sata connectors on my p35c-ds3r for the sata drive and the ide for my cd/dvd. the cd/dvd drive is plugged in the second, furthest away connection on the cable, so i should be using slave be used?

to make sure im ok bios wise, should i use optimised or failsafe (with the above settings and usb key/mouse support)

which driver should i select off the gigabyte cd when i wants sata drivers? assuming ive disabled the gigabyte onboard thing, assume its the intel ihc9 driver (ahci or raid?)

if ppls could help me with this i'll feel a bit more confident reinstalling as it was more luck than skill that got me up and running - jammy selection but ive messed with it so many times now im a bit clumsy! lol

When I install my O/S I have noticed that different versions of windows see my drives in different order???

So, I have only my Raptor connected ( Vista sees it as C: as it should, but as Drive 2? - XP sees it as G: but at its normal Drive 0 ??? FFS??? )

Yes, set the BIOS option on your SATA Port as IDE, not RAID or AHCI or anything. Dotn get confused with anything silly that you wont have any real benefit of anyway.

When installing, its often adviseable to select the installation defaults in the BIOS, so do that.

I also remove or disable anythign thats not absolutely vital too! - Parallel and Serial ports for 2 obvious examples of ports that are rarely used these days.

Which driver?

I dont have that exact Board, or Driver CD so I cannot truthfully comment on this, but surely there is an installation program that you can go through, and if not, cant you let Windows itself choose for you?

re: drivers.
well, i have some. on cd. :(

using the update driver wizard says the best driver is installed.

if i set sata port to ide then the hdd doesnt work. this sata / ide is messy innit??

Re the ide drive,

you should set that to cs (cable select) and ensure that its plugged into the master connector on the ide cable.

Newer motherboards are not designed to run hdd's on the single ide channel anymore. If you look in a lot of manuals the ide channel is now described as for use of optical drives.

Ok, if when set to IDE, the HD does not work, then thats simply because you had it set to AHCI / RAID before, and it has stored its data differently.

All you need to do, is have it set the way you had it before and it will work again.

In order to make things more simple, when you can, copy all the data off that drive onto another one and then go back into the BIOS, set the controler back to IDE, go back into Windows and format the disk again, and put the data back, otherwise you are only going ot have more hassles like this again.

Since it says the Drivers being used are the best drivers, then thats all you can do. Dotn force other drivers unless oyu know what you are doing, and as you said... The Disk controler is set differently.

DONT USE CABLE SELECT

CS Mode on Hard Disks are an old mode used by makers like HP and it should no longer be used. Many New HDs dont even have it anymore for a reason.

I think I'm confusing people.

The HDD is SATA2 and the ODD is EIDE.

It's on cable select and in position 2 on the IDE cable as position 1 doesn't reach and if I have the ODD at the lowest point, it interferes with the power connecter on the mobo and the cable coming from the PSU

It doesn't matter which connector it's on if you set it as master, this will override the Position on the cable (Hence Cable Select mode).

Well, apparently it DOES matter.

Connected the ODD onto the master and set jumper accordingly. It works!

Set it to slave and reconnected it.... It works!

Huzaaaaah.

Now, if only I could get the 7.11 cats to work - well, i say the gfx drivers but i mean catalyst control center. PITA!!!

No, it does not matter. It has not matters for several years.

( Hey ALI - home=/dev/null )

Try to use MASTER or SLAVE but avoid Cable Select as it is no longer supported by anyone really.

The cable might say MASTER and SLAVE, but trust me, while years ago, using the old ATA mode, this might have made a difference, for the last hundred years this has made absolutely no difference at all. It does not matter which connection you use, or which jumper you use either, not when you are only using one device on the line.

Some IDE Cables have MASTER / SLAVE / MOTHERBOARD written on them, but this is really only for beginners and its only really a guide.

It should not matter where on the cable you have it, and it should not matter whether the Jumper is Master or Slave...It should work on both.

Just dont use Cable Select
