Im so glad my birthday is in September. I mean, if it was in June I would have been gutted.

I had my eye on upgrading my 2600+

On my budget I was looking at AMD 3500 single core.

Now, all of sudden I can buy an X2 3800+ for pennies more!

Or a few dollars more buy the bee's knee's of CPU's - A conroe!!

After AMD's price slashing, it seems Intel are doing the same...

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/07/27/intel_intros_conroe_cuts_pentium_prices/

So now im thinking... Hmmm... Will I need a conroe. (given that almost anything is better than my 2600+)... Would it not be better for me to use the savings from AMD or Intel and put these towards a better graphics card.

Say an X1900XT instead of the X1800Gto I was going to buy (due to my budget on the CPU)

Well, things have another 2-3 weeks before I make my purchase... But im wondering that AMD are releasing AM2 socket set and the new Conroe needs a new chipset, will there be large discounts on motherboards for the old chips? Or will the price of these old mobos go up??

If they go down as well, the budget for my graphics card goes up....

Im in my element... Woohoo...

The thing is though, I PERSONALLY wouldnt spend amazing amounts on a graphics card at the moment, as DX10 cards arent that far off. Atleast a processor as good as the conroe will last you a long time.
Just my opinion!

totally wrong buy an x1800xt and an x2 2800 they clock like mad and will be as good as your average conroe at stock, then upgrade next year when conroe is half price

An X1900XT will last a fair while, I know once I order my HIS it should do a good 2 years tbh.

Stuff buying a DX10 card at £400 with only minor peformance increases. And it is far off! :p

And to OP, Yes it's MADNESS I TELL THEE!!!!

I'm confused myself :p

Well, whenever you decide to buy, waiting six months will always get you a better or cheaper computer.

What games do you play, and at what resolution? Personally, I would go with the theory that a better graphics card will make more of a difference than 200 or 400 Mhz on the processor.

People are still using dx8 and even dx7 cards now to play games, I expect dx9 will be just the same if not more so. The first dx10 only game must be at least 1 year and probably more then 2 years away

If it weren't for AMD, we wouldn't have Core 2, and if it weren't for Core 2 then we wouldn't have affordable Athlon 64 X2s. Right now is one of the best times to purchase a new processor that we've seen in a long time -- assuming current prices hold and that availability of Core 2 Duo chips is reasonable in the next week or so. If you've been running a single core processor and are finally looking to make the jump to dual core computing, there's little reason not to at this point.

And not only that - looking at the offers this week, it's also the best time to purchase a new graphics card too!

But stay away from the Intel Pentium D's is it? I hear they run hot, dont overclock and are slower than the AMD's X2... Also I think they use more juice, and considering the increase in electricity today I think that it something we need to be careful when choosing a rig...

Might the conroe actually work out cheaper than the X2 3800+ when you factor in the lowering wattage over a year!!!

Thinking about getting maybe an X1800GT, and then another later on when they are cheaper still... (Which they will be... or even buying a 2nd hand one at one point...)

Games I play...

Oblivion.
Age of Empires
oh, and I still enjoy
San Andreas

Yep, stay clear of the Pentium Ds. The 800 series is awful, the 900 series is a fair bit better but not as good as the X2s

The Conroe chips, though, are a different story entirely

How much are the X1800GT GPUs now? Depending on budget the X1800XT for £150 inc VAT is a great deal

...........not so .....alan wake will be released about the same time as vista that will be dx10 only

I would'nt of said he was totally wrong.

He is right about the G cards, they are changing in a few months. He was right about the Conroe. If you buy a Conroe E6600 you will not need to upgrade for quite some time!! as the GPU will be the bottleneck for quite a while I should imagine.

If you dont want to spend a whole lot of money, and want to upgrade, there has never been a better time to get a bargain. You can put a very very fast system together for as little as £600. If you want to then add a nice little wide screen monitor and gaming Keyboard and mouse you are looking at about £800. You can't afford not to buy now if you are upgrading.

-|ScottFree|- is not a sales rep for overclockers and will not accept any responsibilty for encouraging you to spend this months housekeeping on new tech although if you were looking for a bargain you would be a fool not to

If I where you:

I would buy the 3700+ San Diego S939, or the S939 X2 3800+
A X1800XT graphics card.

For slightly over £200 you get near high-end PC performance.

by the time september comes there may be no stock of the x2 939 cpus
or single core cpu's as there end of the line

may mean buying a used 939 cpu? or going conroe

This is such an easy question to answer.

E6300 at £135

All this talk of getting x 3800 etc...Is nonsense!

As for the gfx card...

Get a 7600 GT or something to carry you seamlessly over to DX 10

Thats just how I feel right now, I baught my system in early june knowing their would be some price cuts comming up. Little did I know that end of July I would be able to buy the X2 4800 for a similar price to what I paid for the 3800. And that was on special offer at the time too ;)
I wait , wait n wait to when i think pricies are reasonable and always endup with pricies going down soon after I decide I cant wait any longer. On pretty much everything I buy ;)
