Re jiggle my long end?

between the two talked about - which (if any) is quicker to auto focus?

I've used both on a 5D MkIII, there isn't much of a difference between them in terms of AF and tracking (I was shooting runway models). I did miss the extra 100mm whenever I used the 70-200L IS II though.

If you want to use the Canon 1.4X and 2.0X convertors, then you can rule out the 70-300mm L.

They aren't officially supported, since although they can be used when the lens is zoomed out to the long end, they physically hit the rear zoom elements when zoomed all the way in. Not a problem if you're going to be zoomed all the way out - but if you forget you're going to be zooming two glass lenses towards each other.

No I wouldn't be using it on the 70-300mm. I'm sure I would be disappointed in quality.

I think I need to have a think if I will ever want that long end (200-300mm) in a walk about format

Let's face it. I'm not going to take the 500mm to the zoo.
I would take the 70-200mm f2.8 but would it be long enough?

I'm not experienced enough to even guess!

That made remember last week... I went to a Wetlands park, I hadn't been there before but it turned out to be ducks, ducks, ducks and full of kids. Anyway sat a the side of a pond were 3 photographers all with 500mm lenses and in full Camouflage!! I was laughing so much I forgot to take a photo of them :(

Wetland parks quite often have a variety of wild birds which use the wetland areas outside of the tourist areas.

You forgot or you took a pic but you can't see them because of their awesome camouflage eh? Who's the fool now?! :P

I've taken 500mm sized lens to the BWC but it does 200-400/320-560 so it's definitely useful even if everyone stares a bit :P

When I took my 120-300mm to whipsnade they almost didn't let me in thinking I was going to sell pics.

Big lens /= pro!
