Re-mapping Focus 1.8 TDCI

LOL

Websites/Adverts like that make me laugh. What's the woman on the front page meant to be doing

Does having her on the cover suggest that diesel tuning is sexy and desirable to ladies lol :D

No it's kind of aimed at blokes in the time-old fashion of "pretty lady makes things sell better to men"... as if that wasn't obvious. :D :p

New turbo for mine is going to be over a grand for just the parts, and thats if I get it from the states.

For the coupe? A standard T28 can be had new for much less than that, and a reconditioned one for probably ~£300 or so.

You're right... but even most diesel remaps are based around up'ing the fuel pressure... They don't even up the boost much.

Proper remaps will alter the injection timing/durations rather than just working the fuel pump harder

What Mondeo do you have? Have you done a Blue Fin upgrade? I'm sorely tempted to buy one of these little babys for my Mondeo ST TDCi!

How much better does the car feel to drive? Do you get that lagg in 6th as you pull away on the motorway?

thanks

Greg

Mines an 05 ST TDCi. I've got a Bluefin and a K&N panel filter which I got through a group buy about 15 months ago with a decent discount.

Car is much stronger in 3rd and above, the power hangs on right until the redline where as standard it dies at about 4200RPM - it's all to easy to hit the limiter. Performance about 60mph in 6th is much improved too - no real lag and it'll pull right up to about 130mph. Torque steer is not an issue but you have to be careful coming off roundabouts at speed because if you nail it before the wheels are straight it will carry straight on until the ESP catches it, but that goes for an turbo car really.

Mine is coming up to what normally would be replacement time but I'm genuinely struggling to find something thats a reasonable step up to replace it for under £20k and is no older than the ST and has all the kit.

Didn't know yours had been modified.
It hasn't.....yet. My turbo works fine, so if I did upgrade (which is what the guy I was quoted was talking about) I'd probably bethinking about getting a G28R. I've just checked fccuk and someone's managed to get a group buy setup to get the turbo for £550. However there are a few more bits to add onto that price to get it all fitted. Plus of course I'd have to get a FMIC and modified induction, battery relocation. It certainly doesnt come cheap.

But then I got the bike and thats taken my my 'need for speed' away from fiddling with the car for the time being.

I am very, very tempted to get a 20VT myself. Been looking around for the last few weeks to get a handle on common problems etc. For a performance car made by Fiat, they seem to be quite reliable :)

Hmm, tempting, very tempting! Where did you get it from? (Bluefin that is) Direct from superchips?

What do you notice with the K&N filter?

Greg

Reliable, yes I think so. However they do require a certain amount of care, over and above what you'd have to do with a 'normal' car.

Plus as with many cars, there are little qwerks that you can either spend all your time and money trying to fix, or just live with.

Little things, like a bit of brake squeal, the irritating internal fan, a bit of italian logic to the central locking, the stupid handles which touch your head if you're tall.

Plus there are some common faults eg; worn clutch, cracked manifold, cambelt needing replacing, worn turbo, tired suspension, exhaust. Most of these things you will find on any car, but they can cost a bit more to repair on this car.

This will give you a rough idea of the cost of fixing any problems.

Mine came from Graham Goode Racing - on the group buy it cost about £400 with the K&N.

K&N makes a marginal difference to the smoothness and pickup, but I doubt it gives any extra power.
