After reading this article today:

I can totally understand what he is experiencing, myself i am about to turn 34 and have noticed whilst playing Battlefield 1 that i just happen to be just off the pace of some of the other players, but i guess iam lucky and find myself still finishing in the top 5 on my team in the end. Any of others my age or older starting to notice this? Or is just lack of game time as we get older, for me i manage average out about maybe 2 hours a day if i am lucky as i have two younger children. Some of the younger lads i work with seem to manage well over 5 hours day, i remember those days.....

I recently started playing a bit of CS again (about an hour a week), and I can seem to hold my own. Just seem a bit rusty with my skills, and sometimes I get a bit frustrated, but i think that just because I am out of practice!

I'm 38 and play CS:GO if I 'm home early and the wife is on her way. I mainly play arms race and win the rounds more often than not. Having played CS for 17 years and having a 144mhz freesync monitor helps but I honestly don't feel any slower than I was in my 20s.

As someone who played Unreal Tournament "Instagib" more than the average player from ~2000, shockingly my reflexes and accuracy are relatively awful ~17 years on and in my mid 40s!

While it's not a shooting game, I'm very aware that some days, it takes a while for me to get out of neutral to play Rocket League to a relatively acceptable Gold2 standard.

The amount of time I used to spend in TFC and RtCW was insane. Used to be pretty damned good but these days I just spaz out and can't hit anything for toffee.

I prefer single player now.

I totally relate to this.

Used to all be about CS, day of defeat CS:source then TF2 then MW4, Any Call of duty up until Blops and now im just a slow, crap player. Ill blame lag or anything truth is im just crap now.

Civ 6 and world of warships for me now. Slow games that are low on twitch reaction lol

Definitely not as quick as I once was, however is that down to age or down to not playing as much as I used to?

Also - I'm don't play as many FPS games as I used to, more time spent racing/flying now with the odd FPS thrown in.

I used to love playing Call of Duty but gave up about three years ago. Just the other week I went on my step-sons Xbox One for a go on the latest COD and got my arse handed to me. I was getting killed before I even realised someone was there. Anyway, these days I play BF1 if I was FPS games, it's a slower pace which is manageable for me. I spend most my time playing Cities Skylines and other games which don't require lightning fast reactions.

If you keep up with playing you'll get quicker reactions, if I take a break from shooters for a few week it takes me a good week to get back to somewhere close to where I was.

100% agree, went on holiday a few weeks ago and the first couple of games back i got my arse handed to me on BF1.

I used to be insane at CS with the AWP moved onto cod wrecked that too.

i'm around 30's and remember thinking wtf my reaction time sucks... I think though it's because I just overall play less. When I was younger I played a LOT more.... I'd sometimes play country strike for a good 5-7 hours straight.

Now I get bored after 30 mins.

Edit: I still do well on bf1 as a sniper though and generally can top scoreboard (not as a sniper) a lot of time without using a vehicle.

45... Still got it however I do get nagged at for playing so much, but everyone needs a hobby.

(she is also yet to discover the current mancave will be moved into the larger spare room and turned into a padded cell for VR with all the cables dangling from a wire system currently in development)

This is why I don't play online games anymore. I don't spend enough time gaming to actually keep up with all the kids these days and if i'm not competitive it just isn't as fun. I miss the days of spending hours and hours on CS: Source every day :(

I don't think it's all down to reaction speed, which will obviously diminish with age (although I'm guessing this will vary widely). Being able to recognise cue's and situations and accurately predict what might happen next will help inordinately and allow experience to supplement pure reaction time.

In 2014, researchers at Simon Fraser University in Canada analysed 3,305 people aged 16-44 by testing their performance on a real-time strategy video game, and found cognitive decline appears to begin at the age of 24.For every 15 years after the age of 24, cognitive speed dropped by around 15 per cent.

Well that's depressing.

Also there's this but it seems wildly inaccurate as I managed to half my score with practice!

I'm 30 and I almost hit masters in Overwatch after playing for 3-4 months while mostly playing Soldier 76 and Roadhog. This is after not really playing any serious FPS games for several years as well. I feel like the guys who are better than me probably just dedicate more time too it, which obviously takes a hit when you have a full time job and a partner, etc.
