Reading Town, What's it like?

Many years ago while in sixth form I went out with some mates into Reading for the very first time. Some of them split off and found this mystical place called TUCs. I say its mystical because to this day I have never found it, nor do any denizens of Reading seem to know anything about it.
Ahaha, I remember that night. Also the Burger King confusion - no one told me there were two!

I thought you hated the PT, too. Weird.

What's the traffic like?

As I was a student with no car I'm not going to be that much help but...

The only area that I always see as gridlocked is the road that passes by the Oracle shopping centre car park and the associated roundabout. There's about fifty different ways to get into a crash there. The roads leading into the town centre (Queens Road, Kings Road and London Road springs to mind) get quite packed during rush hour. Watch out for some confusing one way systems as well (London Road if I am right).

If you are going to live in the town centre and have a car make sure you get allocated parking, as apart from the Oracle and a couple of other shopping centre associated car parks, there's not much space for a car.

Traffic is fine unless you want to go anywhere at rush hour or school leaving times :p

I guess you could look in the London Road/Queens Road/Kings Road area... some nice new apartments and some nice houses along those roads, not too far from Oracle building, and town is walkable too.

This is really helpful thanks!

I'll actually be working out near pangbourne so will be driving out of the city in morning and coming back in evening, definately gonna have parking spaces included for the house.

Nice apartment blocks springing up all within 'viewing' distance' of the Oracle. Damn expensive though.

There's some new ones we have found on Nelson Mews, off southampton street that look good.

Though I haven't been down that street before, its seems fairly close to the town centre enough not to be extremely expensive. Again I haven't seen this area, but it is not far north from the council-estatey type area I lived in during my student days (I lived off the Shinfield road). They are nice houses, but theres a lot of the usual sterotypes about.

my friend went to uni there for 3 years and loved it
my boss went to uni there and hated it

thats all the experience I have sorry, apart from the festival and the madjeski stadium.

I know where that is, its also known as the Afterdark. Its near Fun & Frolics, basically it looks like a little alleyway but when you walk down there you come to the door-way of the club. Its quite a fun place to go on a Friday.

Lots of Chinese bar maids who don't understand licensing laws. :p

Also Reading owns! :D Oracle is pretty nice and they're building another big shopping place soon near the library I think. :)

Reading is NOT a city. It's the biggest town in the country, but it's not a city (despite being bigger than some places that are cities). Reading isn't too bad a place I suppose, there's a fair amount of bars and clubs some of which are crap others are ok.
