Ready to order uni laptop

I'm not doing anything ICT related, otherwise I would have gone straight for a Windows based laptop.

You can get the Educational Upgrade version of Vista Home Premium for £40-ish if you look around (incl. Google Checkout discount). If you're only going to end up using Windows for gaming though, might as well stick with XP, for now at least.
Doesn't that still require a full (non-upgrade) copy of Windows XP to start with? Also, were Microsoft idiots so that you have to install XP first before running the Vista upgrade, or does the Vista installation just ask for a valid XP disc/serial number?

Actually this does seem a bit stupid; Buying a Mac and I'm already talking about buying Vista for it too :D I think you're right though, I'll stick with XP for stability.

One last question. Will I have any network problems regarding a normal windows laptop and the windows-emulation on bootcamp? ie Lan gaming?

Thanks

With bootcamp it isn't emulated :) it is a fully native XP operating system :) you'll have no problems, at least I don't :)

Remember to get the lovely education discount of 15% (depending on what University you attend) and the extremely cheap Applecare if you go for the macbook pro, you'll be able to save loads!

Oh I see, well in that case surely it's just as stable as the real thing!

Thanks for all the advice. I'm really liking the sound of this Mac now. I take it Bootcamp is really easy to setup?

Cheers

If you are going to do programming as part of your degree, the university may be part of the MSDN Academic Alliance and thus you may be able to get Vista Business for free. :)

I don't believe my luck!

It appears they've just launched the new OS too!!!!!!

edit: ok maybe not, I thought they had when they changed their homepage.
