What's the difference between dedicated to readyboost and system speed ?

My understanding of it is so that you can set how much of the drive is used for ReadyBoost, so you can still use it for file storage. or you can set it to use the whole drive.

No actual 'difference' between the 2 other than space used.

The first will use the entire drive for ReadyBoost the second option will allow you to select the amount of space reserved by ReadyBoost but as it states whilst the drive is being used for ReadyBoost you can't access the remaining space but you would if you plugged the dive into another machine.

well i used it for about 8 months in vista 64bit and nothing improved in that time
stopped using it and nothing changed
that was on a laptop with 2gig and the stick was 4gig
if your running 512mb - 1 gig ram it may help but i say not if u have more ram

I have a 4GB ReadyBoost setup on my Vista workstation, which already has 4GB of RAM.

If I take out the ReadyBoost now I can certainly notice a difference in 'snappiness'.

Same here.

Only reason I say that is because the ReadyBoost USB stick somehow got dislodged from the back of the PC a few weeks ago. I kept thinking "why is my PC so slow recently... the HDD keeps chugging". Then I realised the ReadyBoost drive wasn't showing on My Computer... replugged it in and within a few hours everything was back to normal pace :)

That depends on how you use your system and it's hardware. A blanket statement like that is simply untrue.
I suppose W7 compiling some kind of graphs to show how its use of ReadyBoost has improved (or not!) performance compared to how it would have been without ReadyBoost would be a good feature.

I've got a 4GB USB pen as a ReadyBoost. Haven't really tested its effect on performance by removing it yet. Suppose I could. :p

*This is where you tell me W7 already does this. :D*

Guys I have just conducted some EXTREMELY accurate benchmarks with Win7 on an inspiron 1720, 2gb system RAM.

Opening iTunes times were 9.5-10s WITHOUT readyboost

Opening iTunes WITH readyboost 7.3-8s

So it IS faster for me:D
This is using a Kingston 8GB class 6 SDHC, allocating 4096mb to readyboost

Gonna buy a dedicated card now (the kingston is for my digicam, will a 4GB card be enough or should I get 6GB so that the full recommended 4096mb can be used?

You can always load up Performance Monitor (start->run->perfmon.msc-OK) and add the ReadyBoost counters.

ReadyBoost seems to get used A LOT on my PC. Admittedly there is more writing than reading. But reading seems to spike whenever I switch between applications. Particularly if I've just been playing a game. When exiting and bringing back up a minimised IE browser window the ReadyBoost goes mental on the PerfMon graphs.
