Hey guys, my 6 year old has really got into playing Hearthstone with me and now has a keen interest in playing real cards that would be similar - cards that you play that battle each other.

I remember playing with 'top trumps' as a kid and a few other packs that I can't remember the name of. I'm not getting very far with google, can anyone recommend a card game that is along these lines?

Thanks

It's not massively complicated though I've only played the video game version of it. There's a few online series that can give you a good idea. Geek and Sundry has one with Day9 that you can see here for example

Another option is Yu-Gi-Oh but I know nothing about that!

Yu-gi-oh or Pokemon would probably be the place to start a 6 year old. They're both simple enough mechanically, but have some engaging tactics and combos.

Personally, I preferred Yu-gi-oh - it's good fun to play, and you can build simpler versions of common MTG type decks that'll mean it's not such a big jump to Magic. The way they resolve card order helps with MTG as well.

Hearthstone is actually based loosely on the WOW TCG, not MTG. WOW TCG is defunct now, though, so finding packs will get harder.

Ah :\ didn't know they discontinued it, think I still have some unsealed packs that came with the Collector's Editions of WoW that I never used because no one I know plays it.

Well whether it's based on MTG via the WOW one or not it's still based on MTG :p

Well yeah :p but if he wanted something closer to Hearthstone I thought the WoW TCG would be more similar than MTG.

Alright thanks guys, when I said similar to Hearthstone I meant that the cards 'fight' each other rather than say a card game like Uno :)

Yu-gi-oh looks good, I want to spend as little as possible on it to start with to make sure he wants to play it. Can anyone recommend a good starter deck? Where ideally I can just buy a pack that we can play to see if he likes it.

The Yugi and Kaiba reloaded decks should be fine, and should be fairly evenly matched too

Under no circumstances play Yugi-oh. It's a horribly broken money sink.

An unusual suggestion - try Quarriors. It's a non-collectible dice game rather than a collectible card game, but it feels quite similar to Hearthstone. Players use dice to generate Quiddity, a resource that is used to buy better dice and activate other dice to become creatures. Those creatures then attack everyone else's creatures. You score points if your creatures survive until the beginning of your next turn, at which time you can also take weaker dice out of your pool. It's simple and fun and I think it will appeal to anyone who likes Hearthstone.

Yu-Gi-Oh would be the obvious starting choice for a child that age. Beware, though... as mentioned, it's very much a money pit -- but ultimately so is Magic: The Gathering, which is the natural progression.

+1 for Quarriors, though. That's filled with loads of really cool dice.

No one has suggested Pokemon?! A 6 year old would love it. Not much like Heartstone, but does have monsters etc in it. I remember playing it at school. Its still going strong as well and (if I remember correctly) pretty easy to learn.

Or just sit him down with a basic deck of MTG cards and play that. As long as you don't throw in some of the more difficult rules and just keep it so the cards in the deck are the common type (so they don't have abilities) he should be fine. Then when he gets the hang of it, add in some more of the rules via adding in cards with abilities.

The basics of MTG are pretty simple. Its when you have to think about the combo's and what cards to use when etc does it get hard.

I picked up the starter packs of Yu-Gi-Oh and he enjoys it but it is quite complicated for him to keep track of. I'll have a look at the other suggestions as well, thanks guys :)
