Real Coffee....

Any recommendations for a coffee machine that makes normal mugs of filter coffee from ground coffee? And maybe that has a milk frother / warmer?

Depends on what you're expecting. If you're wanting something like a decent coffee shop will serve such as a decent latte/cappuccino, you need an espresso machine such as a Gaggia Classic. You can't make filter coffee with it but you can make Americano drinks.

A cheaper, less elegant option is to use something like an Aeropress which takes care of your filter needs and get a manual Bodum milk frother. The milk frother is a bit like a french press. You warm some milk in it and use the plunger to create a foam. It won't be a microfoam though; it will be dense frothy bubbles but the end result can be quite pleasant.

There are stovetop milk frothers which will produce a better foam than the Bodum but they are a lot more expensive and I think if you're going to go to that sort of expense, you might as well get an espresso machine.

Thought the hijack might finally have the op sniffing round his own thread again :D.

Roasted whole beans because they stay fresh for longer. Pre-ground will already be stale by the time you open the packet. Or so the aficionados seem to think.

If you buy pre-ground from somewhere like Hasbean it will be fresh. But once you open the bag it goes stale quickly. The stuff i got from there was really nice.

I'd suggest buying a bag and then see if you notice any difference in taste after storing it for a while (depending how fast you go through coffee). My sister doesn't seem to notice any difference in taste and will use bags that have been in the fridge for weeks. No point buying a grinder if you dont notice any taste difference.

Please tell her to keep the coffee out of the fridge. Possibly the worst place to store it.

Not fussed about espresso, I just want a decent automatic filter coffee machine.

Take a look at the Technivorm range. They start with 1 litre capacity ones iirc.

Automatic filter makers that are any good are pretty rare though. It's pretty much just as easy, and with better results to use a Chemex or something along those lines.

You won't get a milk frother on a filter machine either. That's an espresso machine function.

That's odd then. My parents have got a coffee machine with a spinning whisk-type attachment on the side of it, but that has a filter and drips the coffee into a rather large plastic jug below for when you have lots of people wanting coffee. Do they have an espresso machine then, as it doesn't taste like espresso strength wise.
