Real failure rate?

I've just had a read of this thread (http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/xbox360_whatsnext.asp) and it makes quite interesting reading.

In particular the bit about not keeping it in a stereo cabinet is interesting. I think everyone who has had a problem with their 360 should also post a picture of their setups :p

It's a well known fact that people need to keep the thing cool and I've seen so many photo's of setups with the 360 crammed into a stereo cabinet or sitting on top of a heat generating source such as a sky box.

Doesn't bode well for the summer though does it? Anyone know how much it would be to have air conditioning installed? ;)

Well considering theres absolutely millions upon millions of washing machines churned out every day, then yes the failure rate would be high, when the 360 was released there was something like what a couple of hundred thousand, and yet look at the failuire rate, 35 on here alone, god forbid if they made about 10 million to ship on launch day, we would probably have about 5 million users just on here alone with faulty ones.

there was a bit more than a couple of hunderd thousand shipped for launch. more like 1.5 million worldwide.

I think for the amount of 360's that were released the failure rate is appaling, as i said above what would it be like if they managed to churn out 10 million for release day, 360's are going down day in day out, and thats out out of a couple of hundred thousand, there still in shortage, you still can't just walk in and pick one up, yet if you want a washing machine .........

Percentages mean diddly squat to me, whos to say what the failure rate would be if they released a billion, that would mean more going down, so the failure rate could be the same, or it could rise as they may be more faulty ones churned out, we just don't know as they only released a piddly amount.

you don't get it do you? the failure rate would be the same, regardless of how many 360's were sold.

for example....if you bought 10 oranges and 1 was rotten you could call that a 10% failure rate.

but if you bought 1,000,000 oranges and 100,000 were rotten, it would STILL be a 10% failure rate.

now replace oranges with 360, and you might understand what some people are trying to explain to you.

and see my previous message above for details of how many were sold on release. it's a bit more than a "piddly" amount. but it would still generate the same failure rate.

Why do people say they don't like Microsoft? What have they done to offend so many people?

They make a popular OS that works well and does everything well. It's also pleasing to the eye, functionable and easy to code for. It's not expensive in the scheme of things. They are constantly working to fix things.

I personally think Microsoft are great.

agreed. without them gaming probably wouldn't be as it is today. especially on PC.

There is a lot of anti-ms generally, I dont understand why though personally.

Why do people drum on so much about the failure rate? It just seems like something anti-ms folk have found to constantly pick at. So some xbox 360's fail, big deal, they're covered by warranty, relax...

If my 360 fails (which it may, it has a very early manufacturing date!) i'll ring up and get it replaced. Simple.

Doubt it, by going by the number of consoles that have really failed, then the odds are heavily stacked in your favour that it'll be fine :)
