Real Time Overhaul

Downloading and installing latest drivers/service pack etc...

Then onto some gaming, benchmarking and overclocking :D

If all is stable then remaining hard drives will be installed and cable tidy.

RMA TIME ALREADY! Seasonic popped with a flash earlier on this afternoon. Luckily it's not taken out the rest of my components. Tried paperclip and it's not starting and I'm now running the system with a Tagan PSU.

Computer was just sat idling in Windows and had been for about half an hour and then the Seasonic went.

Yep, very lucky guys after the unlucky incident lol. Oh well. RMA and put up with this Tagan that's quite noisy. I can't use the Enermax as it's only got a 4 pin CPU power connector.

You can plug a 4 pin CPU power into an 8 pin board, if memory serves...? Pretty sure I did it the other week... In fact, yes. 8 pins are only really required when the CPU draw is > 130 watts, and the 3770k you have is 77w?
You're right! Thanks :) Enermax is in. Tagan out.

Ok first benchmark at stock speeds...

ZiYIO.jpg.png

Looking through the Heaven benchmark thread, I think it's the appox figure for my spec?

Wow I had no idea how "low-profile" that low profile memory actually is, that's awesome!

Do miss my 3200LL Pro with the activity LEDs...It's a nice feature when you open the side panel to have a look lol. But yeh was going to go for Crucial Tracer for the activity LEDs but no point for sure now that the D14 is over the memory.

Swapped out the SSD...

Tidied case a bit and will wait for the Seasonic RMA. Won't bother install the storage drives yet until the replacement comes...

D14 and 670 looks like they could do with some scaffolding :p

Stuff still to do...

Install replacement Seasonic PSU when it comes and then the storage drives

Buy NF-S12Bs to replace current NF-P12s or may just get a fan controller but undecided as fan controller will ruin aesthetics of the front of the case

Overclock!

Looks like I'm not the only one..talk of a bad batch that blow during or soon after a Windows install...

Key posts...
Well was I shocked to say the least how such a high end PSU such as this Seasonic XPS 1000 Platinum PSU can blow up in my face literally. On a brand new build after about 8 hours operation the PSU went with a huge spark and massive bang and the resultant dead PC. This was a brand new $3k build and I was ******** bricks the whole PC was taken out.

Luckily, I had an older Enermax 620W Liberty PSU and once plugged in everything came back to life and running well (touch wood) last 30 odd hours.

I've seen cheapo PSU do this over the years but never a new PSU of this calibre and $300 expense. I'm so shocked this PSU got through Seasonic QC and fail so epically, the bang was that loud the missus thought I had done away with myself. Thank god for warranty.
I bought one from them last week, with all the other pieces for my x79 upgrade. Set it up on the weekend, 10 minutes into installing windows and same thing, huge bang, tripped the circuit breaker as well and now dead

I did the same, swapped in my old psu and the rest of the pc runs fine, just need to send it back.
I think you should be right, as already mentioned maybe just a small number of this model Seasonic had a bad component. From my searching around a few forums the ones that failed were DOA or died after a few hours use, that seemed to be the common trend.
Adding another exploding Seasonic PSU to the list - a mate's brand new 1000w unit just exploded after a few seconds of operation.
Yes, I contacted Seasonic and also spoke with the Aussie distributor (Powerhouse PC Australia) and they confirmed to me personally via phone conversation there was a bad batch, a single faulty component on the main board. I couldn't get specifics on which part or affected serial no's etc, but if you got one of these PSU's and it hasn't blown I wouldn't be worried, they fail pretty much straight away when they go. It was admirable that they were honest about it.

There is a new shipment coming in next week that does not have this fault, so obviously I'm waiting for new stock to arrive.
My Platinum 860W PSU failed in the same manner after the first 4 hours on my recent build. Took it back to umart two days later who swapped it for a new one straight away, no questiosn asked.

Discovered a couple of days later that one of the USB3 controllers on the motherboard wasn't working and also had it replaced. I'm not sure whether it was related to the PSU failure. No issue with swapping that through umart either.

My replacement PSU has been working ok, however I haven't had it anywhere near full load as I sized it for future capacity to allow for installing extra hardware.
Sigh, I wish I'd read this thread earlier.

Same thing just happened to my new Seasonic XP-1000. Finally put together my new machine, and was having a look around the BIOS, when there was a small pop, and the whole machine went dead. Also tripped the circuit breaker for the circuit I had it plugged into.

PSU is dead, and it also seems to have taken out the fan controller/control panel on my Coolermaster Cosmos II. Hopefully nothing else (haven't been able to fully test everything else yet).

OP - did everything survive OK? Now I'm worried about something being damaged but not totally fried

Hope my replacement doesn't do the same!

Yikes about the PSU - I'm surprised there not been a recall if theres a common problem with a particular batch.

At least the problem seems to be non destructive to other parts. Are we to assume that you're not going to hide away the cables until the RMA'd one comes back...?
Yep, will hide cables once I've got my replacement but as Roalith mentioned I don't think there's much in the way of hiding spots besides behind the hard drive cage. The cage will be loaded with all my drives so the cabling won't be visible. Good thing the Seasonic is modular too. I'm going to email OcUK now that I've just sent the parcel as I'm inclined to stick with the Enermax brand and go with the Platimax range...
Nice looking build you got here ! p.s. Heaven benchmark should be run again with Tesselation set to high I think :)
Thanks mate, will rerun it once I have my replacement PSU installed and then again after overclocking. :)

OcUK have received my RMA and thanks to Joseph for accepting my refund request!

Pretty much set on the Enermax Platimax 850W.

Wasn't quite happy with the way my SSD was mounted as you can see from the photo below. The anti vibration mounts were installed on the front of the Akasa and I was forced to awkwardly screw in the back end of the Akasa SSD mount to the HDD cage. I also used my new LIAN LI HDD mounting kit screws. The thread stops mid way so the rubber gromets are not squashed.

Cleaned off the thermal pads once I had removed the drive...

Tada! Smarter look and doesn't look as make shift in the case compared to the Akasa mounting method.

The raptor must be dead for you to do that to it surely? It is looking mighty good...
Nah still working but would rather use the latest SATA 6GB/s 7200 rpm drives than the Velociraptor as a boot drive. It makes too much noise and isn't day and night difference compared to my 2TB drives in terms of speed.

While I'm waiting for the refund, I have just installed my old C300 into my laptop...

Time to prepare the ISO/USB as this laptop doesn't have an optical drive. Should be a world of difference over the 5400rpm HDD :D

Big thanks to 5UB for the delivery today. Was meant to receive the 850W Platimax as a replacement for the Seasonic that blew but it wasn't available so he offered me the 1000W version instead at no additional cost! What a guy! Overkill but I will partially justify the extra wattage with a 2nd 670 in a few months time. :D The 1000W is also a "super overclock edition" with a single rail. Got a Bitfenix Recon too...

Almost a silent setup now. I can just hear the hard drives and a slight electrical noise from the Enermax. It's low frequency and barely audible now that it's all in the case with all the panels on and because I'm sat at a distance away. Silent PC review states there's no electrical noise from the Platimax but just like graphics cards it's hit and miss with electrical noise.
