So I'm a student who studies at university and have been going out on rides with a friend since I started university. Ridden without a helmet since I've been a kid on or off the road just hate wearing them. However today had pretty nasty crash at 40km/h luckily only scratches and a few small cuts. Made me realise I need a helmet and probably some cycling kit shorts jersey etc, cause my casual clothes are ruined. I'll be doing lots of riding over the summer break so just looking for recommendations on good value kit that isnt too expensive as I'm student so can spend at max £150.

DHB kit is well regarded, I've had their thermal bib tights and a summer bib short since Xmas, all good so far. Wiggle or Chinreaction, latter good for British Cycling members, 10% discount off one £99+ basket per month (no minimum spend in Halfords).

Funkier padded shorts are nice, my 14 Panel set are my comfiest pair of shorts to date, their baggie shorts are well made too imo.

The Lusso short sleeved jerseys at Merlin for £16 are a bargain, my only top better is my Endurance FS260 for hot days, which was at least twice that.

Helmets are a lottery, fit is paramount and cyclists tend to have either oval or circular skulls before we even talk about circumference. It took me three online punts using Wiggle's 365 day no quibble return policy to find a good fitting Giro Savant, which happened to be the cheapest of the three at £41.
