Realistic coverage of EE LTE over next 12 months

Does anyone know whether 4G coverage is going to command a greater charge from the networks?

EE is obviously going to be the first to offer such and the only information I see on their website at the moment is a reply from their twitter feed which says they will be announcing pricing soon.

Is it something that can be locked at SIM level, so that you can only make use of 4G if you have the correct contract?

I'm just not seeing it that they would allow a superfast new service for no extra charge, unless somebody knows otherwise?
 
I estimate the 4G contracts to be £35/month+.

It'll be some time before the likes of £15/month for unlimited data ;)
 
So the way I see it is if the EE contracts on LTE are competitive and you have an iPhone 5 you may as well move over.

I would think a better move would be to go on a SIM only contract for 12 months assuming they have 4G plans on those and then you can experience EE network and not be stuck.

It is also safe to assume that IF the other networks launch 4G before the NEXT iPhone that Apple will bring out a variant supporting those other bands BUT I doubt that is realistic.

EE is the safest bet if you want 4G. In the depths of the science museum on Tuesday I got 40Mbits on a One X so the building penetration isn't a huge deal it would seem.

The LTE auction is going to be next summer (please correct me if I'm wrong but that is what I have heard from reputable sources) so even if O2, Vodafone act REALLY fast they would still only be ready by about this time next year and the you may as well wait for the next iPhone.

So EE it is and remember they hope to cover 70% of the UK by this time next year whereas the others will probably have coverage in a tiny portion like EE has right now.
 
Too little too late, 800mhz is LTE band 20 which is not supported by iP5. LTE on band 20 is what many EU countries expect to roll out too, I expect that a chip that supports this will be in the next iteration of the iPhone.
 
To be fair, Apple can only release a phone on the current standards in place today.

With the US having an established LTE network, and the UK having an emerging network it was obviously going to launch with patchy support.

I'm surprised OFCOM allowed EE to launch ahead of everyone (basically flying in the face of pair play), but then the best we can hope for is EE commit to this over the next 12 months and roll out full coverage to encourage and keep customers.

... or, as you say, we'll be in the same situation for iPhone 5S.

Me too I think - I laughed when they said that the nano sims will takes "months" - So ridiculously unprepared for one of the biggest mobile phone launches in history >_>'

I'm thinking of moving to Three - Just off to ask for some opinions :p

lol, ive just ordered the 200 nano sim deal on 3, should have it Monday, pop it in my 4S with the adapter then when the 5 comes pop in the nano-sim ready to go...i hope :D
Will see how long it will take 02/GiffGaff to get their ar5es in gear
 
I think people need to be realistic. Widespread LTE coverage will only start to be here by the time the iPhone 5S / iPhone 6 comes come in 12 month's time, unless you're in a very few select areas. That's not to say people in those areas won't be able to use it, but it will be patchy and highly concentrated. And all the time it is rolled out, doubtless there'll be a significant premium for the LTE option. Let's see what premium the networks charge. Personally I reckon they'll offer very little in terms of allowance and a good tenner a month on top.

At outset LTE willl be the new HD and / or 3D that Sky happily charge a premium for.

I think you are spot on.
I struggle to get even get Edge where my parents live and that is only on the outskirts of London!

It's certainly going to be patchy and they will whack a premium on it because they know they have the market to themselves right now, I would imagine they will take full of advantage of marketing that you get the fastest iPhone5 speeds on their network.
