I havnt realy focused on fat loss / muscle building at all so im unsure if my goal is easily (as in easy to do within the time required, not the difficulty of training) or unrealistic (as in will take longer then i have planned).

Currently im about 6' (havnt measured my height in years so may be remembering myself wrong) and weight about 16 stone 5 pounds. Currently im studying a degree with the OU (so have a fair ammount of free time as its paced slower then a degree at a normal uni) and have about 3 and a half years remaining untill the end. During this time i want to get fit to british army standards so if i decide to apply for the army (which im realy considering doing at the end of my degree) i could get in without any physical problems, or too great a difficulty during training.

i have no idea if i can loose the fat and build up my muscles and fitness level in that time as im clueless about what is realistic when it comes to fat loss and fitness. So could anyone who understands the sort of level i hope to reach know if its possible within my time frame? or is fat loss / muscle building a slow process that takes many years?

You can attain a great level of muscle mass, low bodyfat and high aerobic fitness in the time frame that you have. It's great that you've decided to do this now, and not left it till the last 10 weeks. You have plenty of time to become whatever you wish.

thanks, is good to know i have enough time. over the next couple weeks ill start trying to ease myself into a new diet and start off with a basic fitness routine. Hopefully if i take it slow with changing to a new diet and fitness plan i shouldnt have too much trouble sticking to it. :D

You'll be just fine. Firstly look at your diet and analyse it. Research what would be better in terms of your diet (you can post on here for that) and then begin planning yourself a good weight training and fitness regime.

My advice, as you have plenty of time, would be to concentrate on a good solid weight lifting routine for a while and gain some quality mass and then hit your fitness after this. You have a huge amount of time for both and by the time you reach the army you can comfortably be much fitter & stronger than is required.

Thats what im planning on doing, ive read a bit in this forum about more muscle mass burns more calories so will help to loose weight.

One thing im curious about is weighted clothing, specificaly ankle weights. I know that wearing ankle weights for a short time like a couple weeks wont have any noticle effect, but what if i got some and wore them constantly (except for sleeping and showering etc..) for a couple years, would that make any difference at all? or would just adding a few extra sets of leg exercises in each week accomplish the same thing?
