Realistic WWII FPS

You can download it and purchase a CD key online for $19.99. This includes a 30 day free trial. From then on it's $14.99 a month although you can reduce that to as little as $8.33 with pre payment. Not bad with current exchange rates.

I'd go for Red Orchestra..one of the best games i've played in a long time. Steepish learning curve, but once you've played for a while other games like COD or DOD just look so simplistic and boring.

Features:

No Crosshair. Your gun when shooting from the hip doesn't always shoot in the centre of the screen - you have to judge the angle of the gun to shoot accurately from the hip and the angle changes as you move the mouse around, up to a maximum angle at the sides of the screen. If you have the time though you should go to iron sights (you get iron sights for every gun).

Limited classes. So basically not everyones running around with the SMG's..depends on the map but often you will be using a Bolt Action rifle. I often take the bolt when theres a choice of SMG, semi-auto or bolt, so don't feel like your stuck with a crappy gun. Reason being that although you have a slow rate of fire, at least when you shoot you know your shots going to land where you point. Theres a lot more deviation with the semi's and smg's and theres some hefty recoil. Depends on the map..if its mostly close range then you're better off with the smg or semi-auto, although you can do well close range with a bolt if you get good at hip shooting. And of course you get a bayonet with the bolt :D

Balistics. Each shot fired has its own velocity, which depends on the gun its shot from, so it takes a little time for it to travel to the target. This means you have to shoot slightly infront of the guy you're shooting at (which depends on their distance away from you and how fast they're moving). They also dip a little as they travel, so you have to aim slightly differently depending on how far away they are. With a bolt bullet dip isn't really noticable. SMG's fire a slower round so its a bit more obvious with them. But they aren't accurate enough to use them at those types of ranges anyway.

Sounds - great atmospheric sounds, each with a seperate sound depending on how far away the shot was fired. Inbuilt voip for commanding your team around :D

Maps - theres full tank v tank combat maps, combined arms or just infantry v infantry. I prefer infantry v infantry, but if you like tanks theres a full ballistic system for them too. Each tank has weak points where they blow up in 1 shot as long as you penetrate. Penetration depends on armour thickness, cannon, and the angle of the tank (angling increases armour thickness). You can get data charts off the RO website showing ammo boxes and engine locations. Shooting the ammo box blows em up in 1 shot, engine shots disable the tank, and you can shoot the tracks to disable em too...though its a bit buggy shooting the tracks atm. The view distance has recently been upgraded to about 1400m, but for most maps its about 800m I think. Theres a v good variety of maps too, short, medium and long range ones, about 13 stock maps, and many custom maps too.

Gameplay is some of the best i've played in years..I can't get enough of it :) . It requires skill and a bit of tactics to play well - having good aim, using cover, attacking as a team. You basically have to capture objectives by moving into them with your team mates..the more team mates you have than the enemy in the capture zone the faster you cap it. It really helps to play with good players, so try to join a server with clan members playing for the best experience. I tend to play on the Splat server..they play most days and theres a good bunch of regulars who play there too. Thats one of good point about the game.,.the community is generally a lot more mature than you find in other games like DOD or COD, and i'm yet to see a cheater since I started playing last March.

And another thing - this game gets some of the best support from the devs I've ever seen..regular patches and they keep a close eye on the forums and listen to suggestions.

This Game

- It's not out yet but if you're willing to wait it could turn out to be absolutely amazing. (Could be waiting for about 100 years though :p)

Im glad someone posted this game because it looks ******* fantastic :D

The Lead Developer is active on the forum and will answer most questions about the game that you ask :)

Cheers to everyone for their suggestions - seems to be plenty of life left in these types of games, which can only be good.

The two that interest me most are WWII Online and 1944 D-Day - Operation Overlord. I'm not overly keen for paying monthly for a game, but I suppose I could take the 30 day trial and make my mind up.

sup3rc0w, what makes you think 1944 won't be coming out? :( It would be a damn shame if it didn't, after all everything that is supposedly being readied for it.

Like a lot of people hes probably being a Skeptic about the game because of how much they have said they have done.
But on the forum the lead developer gives you up to date info of what they have done and stuff and how much they have completed. From reading the list they ahve published on there forum there is no way they will can in now

I'd go for Red Orchestra, I played the first version (UT2003?) a little, and really enjoyed it - think it was the use of bolt action rifles and iron sights, while not overly realistic, it helped to add some skill to play.

Scort.

To me it sound like a Very ambitious project, and by the looks of it the game isnt coming out any time soon

It really would be a shame if it didn't amount to anything - although I have to say it sounds like quite an unusual project.

If anything at all, the level of detail they're talking (at least) of including in the game, is something that million dollar companies that make games professionally, should surely be aiming towards doing.

Yeh I can see why people would be slightly sceptical because of how big this game is supposed to be.

If it turns out even 50 % as good as it's supposed to, it will still be amazing. I'll be jumping into Normandy and promptly hiding in a ditch for 12 hours ;):D

It will be a shame, but all I have seen so far, are promises and plans of immense proportions, and all they have to show for it, are fancy models.

Just sounds fishy to me

I just gave up my subscription to WWIIOnline after playing it for a year or so.

I wouldn't really call it an FPS, rather a complete battle simulation.

As someone said, the graphics and engine are not up to current standards, but if you're into WW2 then you will not find a deeper or more accurate game, period.

Oh and if you do get into it and past the trial period be prepared to give up a significant chunk of your free time! :D

/ thread hijack

Briton/Molinari - which squads did you play in?

From the Lead Developer in a thread from late last year

Can't really slap a % on how much is done. Coding wise with the move away from the Reality Engine we did take a hit. But then to counter that we actually have the full terrain of Normandy and beyond done.

We have over 400+ houses created using pieces which can be clicked together like lego to create infinite combinations.

We have all the houses fixtures and fittings done, like doors, windows, staircases etc. We also have all the bedroom and dinning room props done.

Then we have nearly all the German Tanks done, Tha majority of the US and all of the Commonwealth.

We have all the aircrafts that flew over Normandy done, but are looking to do all the grounded aircrafts as well

We have all the German, US characters done, with the Commonwealth nearly done (just need to be cleaned up)

Texture wise we have a company doing 10 textures a week for us, and they have been working on them for over 2 months now.

Animation wise, well we have a lot of Motion Capture animations done, rigged and ready to roll. Obviously this is phase 1. We will be tweaking these, and then going for more specific motion capture in the new year (feb / march). This will be combined with some really nifty animation software and we will have all of the movements including countless dynamic motions done by March 07.

Tools wise we are working through a new type of terrain editor, that allows you to create huge terrains seamlessly. Where you can load in Digital Data or Topographic data and have a map or portion of the map generated for you. The worlds suface is curved and this is represented in the game, which poses a unique tool development problem. But we are getting over that.

Physx is 100% in the engine and working, ageia will be fixing this up for us in the new year and on the release of each new SDK.

We have all the standard effects as well as Parralax Mapping, Relief Mapping, Light Scattering, Subsurface Scattering, Cloth, Dynamic Lighting, Ambient Occlusion etc.

Slap a % on that if you can.

Although I prefer COD2 as it's less realistic :p

Yeah if you're going to try RO expect to die a LOT before getting any good at it, but if you persevere with it you end up with a much deeper and satisfying experience than you get with COD2 imo. Theres a few things you can do to lessen the learning curve a bit.

Watch the training videos. You can get them off steam. They tell you a few of the basics that should save you from dying a few times.

Play in practice mode for a while first before going online. The bots are pretty dumb and unrealistic, but they're ok to practice against to start with. Get used to bolting after each shot and get a feel for how much you have to shoot infront of moving targets. Have a go with the squad leader in practice mode before going online as him, because its a v important role for the team. You can throw smoke and call in artillery. Just use the binoculars to save a arty spot, then find the radio (press O to find it on the map). Best place for arty is usually behind the next cap area (not on top of it :D)

When you go online try to always be thinking about getting to the next cap zone rather than just looking for kills. Kill people on the way, or avoid them, but always be heading up to the cap zone. Unless you're a sniper or Machine gunner of course :D . If you're attacking it might tempting to crawl all the way to the cap zone. Problem with that though is you will probably get naded at some point on the way and end up more frustrated. When i'm attacking I probably don't last more than a minute or 2, but to win games you have to die a lot. So be careful, but not TOO careful :)

You kind of get chucked in at the deep end when you start playing RO because theres no really easy ways to play. Probably the least difficult to start with is the MG guy because you can sit and camp (which you cant really do when attacking with the other classes cept sniper). You have to use smallish bursts. If it starts overheating the accuracy goes right down, so either wait for it to cool or change the barrel (you get 2 barrels if you spawn as mg). Find the voice comm for ammo and your team mates will hopefully keep your ammo up (it shows up on the map where you are). Also might be a good idea to play only on the defending team to start with. That way you will probably die a bit less because you can sit in the a cap zone waiting for the enemy to come to you
