Really bad MPG

man, you're alright... my mercedes c180 auto stalls sometimes!! i swear, im waiting at a junction to turn off into a road on the right and when i put my foot down to go it just stalls!! :|

although i should add that when i was using BP ultimate, there was never this problem and also my gear changes were a lot smoother too... but my bro insists it's a waste of money and as we share the car he always goes and puts normal fuel in... *sighs*... oh well...

I was wondering about that - where does one find out what this limit is?

Without seeing the ECU's overun cutoff settings it is nigh on impossible, unless someone has worked it out and published it. 1500rpm is fairly typical tho.

do you guys find that really helps? i've always heard it saves on fuel but never really imagined it could be that much

I have never noticed a difference in performance or fuel consumption having air con on or off in any of my cars.

I heard that travelling above 40mph having your windows open will use more fuel that air con due to the extra drag.

Celica GT owner here, i may be able to help. ( i assume you mean gen6? and not the 190 version?)

Ok, mpg for short runs like yours you should be looking at about 25mpg.

I'll list a few common problems on the GT that could be causing the issue;

  • Lambda sensor. These should be changed every 30,000 miles and chances are, yours has never been changed. if this is bad your car will be over fueling like mad.
  • Fuel filler neck. Susceptible to corrosion on the gen6. Get a new one from your local Mr.T dealer.
  • Spark plugs - when was the last time you changed them?
  • HT leads - again, are you using the originals? If so, chances are they are bad.
  • Dizzy cap/ Rotor Arm - Same as above, change them.
  • Clutch Slipping?
  • Brakes Binding?
  • Give the car a good service!

Get yourself down to www.celica-club.co.uk and sign up. Really helpful bunch and they know their stuff. A few car breakers there as well for low cost spare parts.

Hope you get it sorted.

Gil.
