I have got a 5mbps internet deal with bt. I believe it may be broadband option 1. But the phone line is with talktalk.
But i have only been with talktalk for about 1 month and it was just as slow internet when phone was with bt.

I did a speed test on speedtest.net and got about 350kbps download and 380kbps upload. Should i not be getting 5mbps?

Is this right??

Also i saw this http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php# about extension wiring etc. Is this of any relevence. Where i live at the moment, i cant get 8mbps internet which i believe is a different, cheaper type of internet.

Help im completely lost.

Hi
Firstly the 5Mbps is slightly misleading if you dont know what theyre talking about, Mbps refers to Mega BITS per second, whereas your download speed is Mega BYTES per second, the ratio of bits to bytes is 8:1 so your 5 Mbps line should give you a maximum download of 625kbps
Youre only getting half that so youre not quite where you could be at but there could be other factors
Unless youre on a dedicated fibre optic line like Virgin provide then the quoted speed is the maximum you can achieve, it will be lower at peak times of interent traffic due to everyone using the same lines/exchanges - so try it at a few different times of the day, including middle of the night, to get an accurate result
Secondly if youre on a wireless system then you may be losing speed if your PC is too far from your router or your router is not powerful enough
Hope this helps

i got BT and talk talk phone line.

got the best package cause i didnt want any downlad limits.

my IP profile is 3500 so my speed is 3,5 mbits (this is due to big distance from exchange)

you can check your ip profile with the www.speedtester.bt.com

you need to put in the telephone number in there, works for me even tho i got talk talk

i get 400 KB maximum download
but it getts capped often especialy around 19.00 and gets opened around 23.00
after using bittorrent for a few days my line seems slower tho. but i am not sure of that one

My IP profile often drops to 135 this is normal during connection drops.
You can check your line capabilities (Downstream Rate) in your router DSL status

the IP profile should be around 80% of your downstream rate
my downstreem rate doesnt ever go beyond 5000 Kbps
and due to line problems they reduced my IP profile from 4500 do 3500. now it cuts of a bit less.

so if your downstream is higher than 1000 you can easly call bt and complain.
