Ok I am having some grief with my USB headset, its a speedlink medusa 5.1
Now every so often it has a hissy fit where I can either listen through the headphones but the microphone does not work, or I can speak through the mic but the sound is totally disabled and i can hear absolutly nothing through the headphones. This is really irritating for me as a gamer.

Anyway to fix this I just unplugged it, and then plugged it into a different USB port, thus causing it to show up as a new USB sound device(2) then sound device (3) etc. Anyway I have now totally exhausted ALL the USB ports on my machine and it no longer works in any of them, (I think i made it up to USB sound device (10) or something). Anyway is there a way to make windows forget that I have had this device plugged in previously or anybody have experience of this kind of thing that can suggest a solution.

Really tempted to just throw the dam thing away and get a PCI sound card and a non USB headset :(

Maybe a quicker way but assuming your in windows plug it in open device manager and find it. right click and uninstall :)

Section: Human interface devices or Sound etc

thanks for the reply, I uninstalled the device in the device manager, but when i plugged it back in, it showed up as USB device (3) again :(

Also the problem seems to be related to steam chat, the device will be working fine, but upon entering steam voice chat it will randomly decide to work with either the headphones or the mic but not both.

Perhaps try to install the drivers directly from the speedlink website google for "speedlink medusa 5.1 driver" its ur first result. Reboot then plug in and see if that changes anything

yeah i've already reinstalled them several times :(
Deffinatly a problem with steam chat, I rebooted my PC, audio is all ok, I can get sound through my mic, as soon as i open a steam chat window my mic or headphones become totally unresponsive and totally shut off. Weirdest problem ever.

I would say stick with none usb then :) Ive got 2 pairs of headphones for my pc, One is creative fatal1ty pro series set (none usb) and the others are beats by dre solo hd's. Never a problem to date..

I think you may be right.

Interestingly managed to fix it by plugging in and unplugging my 360 controller several times, I think it has something to do with the fact the Xbox controller has a microphone connector on it or something.

As soon as i get shot of my xfire setup and go back to single card i will be getting myself a decent set of non USB surround headphones and a PCI sound card I think :)
