REALLY need some advice here

Any advice offered is greatly, greatly appreciated.

Basically, I'm in a dilemma. Regarding college. I've just finished a year at college and didn't enjoy it at all, so I decided I wasn't going to go back. I was going to get a job as mother was charging me rent etc. And I was going to focus on making music as ultimately, that's what I want to do. But my efforts to acquire a job have been fruitless, and I can't really see myself getting one. So now I'm considering going back to college and taking music, but I'm really not sure if I should go back.. I'm for some advice on whether I should go back, or not.

I know none of you on here can tell me what to do, but I'm just asked for some friendly advice, maybe some experiences of similar situations. I'll be highly greatful if anything posted, I'm really tearing my hair out thinking about this.

how long have you been out of college, and how long have you been trying to get a job for? If you're really desperate for work, start off temping until you either build up enough experience or get made permanent in the role you're in.

If college isn't for you, don't waste another year trying to convince yourself that it is.
 
Are you looking to make music to release it? If so, set yourself a deadline by which point if you haven't "made it" you will start something else.

If you hated it then there is no point in going back, in my opinion.
 
if your struggling, go to an agency and get some temp work to tide you over until some better employment opportunities surface

I'm in a similar situation - I tried making music 24/7 while at uni and got sick of it, but now i just work a normal(ish) job, and do music in my spare time in the evenings. This way it doesn't matter if I "make it" or not. I simply do it for the fun of it. :)

I doubt we'll be seeing breakcore or dubstep in the top 40 anytime soon anyway. :cool: If I were you, I'd get a job, any job, just to pay the bills and the odd bit of music gear, and things should be much easier.

What course are you doing at college btw?
 
I hated my first year at sixth form and dropped out, I just couldn't stand the options i'd chose. I picked the A-levels I knew would get me a good job and into a good uni, but I just hated it.

Changed to a different college and studied a National Diploma in Computing, which I did prefer.

Before hand I was doing AS Levels, politics, computing, photography, etc. And the main thing that irritated me about it was that it occupied my spare time when I could or should be playing music. I'd be hoping that taking music would mean:

  • I can still spend the majority of my time playing
  • I gain valuable experience
  • I will recieve a minor qualification out of it
  • I will recieve free tuition on my instrument
  • I can still see my friends regularly
There are other contributing factors. But these are the main ones for me.

you haven't tried hard enough to get a job by the sounds of things, i don't think it's possible that you're actually unemployable is it?

Take a year out, see how much it sucks to be an unqualified bum with a rubbish job and parents on your back when you knwo you have the potential to be a lot more than that.

Then go back to college.

I noticed you are in Somerset - How far are you from Bristol? If you can get there, check out access to music:

I haven't done any of their courses myself, but I know one of the lecturers there, and and says they have lots of gear to play around with. Something to consider. :cool: :)

Was the mail reason you dropped out because the lack of time you had to do music? Just wondering because college can be pretty intensive, but when you start Uni the workload is much less, well, until your final year that is. I'd say just go though the two years of college working your **** off, doing music in any spare time you have, and then look into going into Uni.

I Dropped out of college right before my A-Levels, because I hated the place, wasn't doing to great, and was just generally sick of that sort of education. I'm now waiting to go in the Army, which has been my plan for several years, so I'm not greatly worried about qualifications at the moment, but after working in civilian life for the past 18 odd months, I realise having no qualifications makes life bloody difficult out in the world.

I'm not trying to dampen your dreams or anything, but you've got to face the reality that the chances are you will not 'make it' creating music. You may do, but what if you don't?

You're only young so go back to college and do something you enjoy, otherwise the chances are you're going to have a poor to mediocre job that you hate more than college and doesn't pay very well.

I'm not saying that's what will happen, but it's possible. I think you should go back to college, college will leave you with much more spare time than full time work will.
 
Well, based on the advice I've received, and my own feelings, I dropped in my application to college today. I've applied for the BTEC in Music Practice.

Thank you for all the advice offered in this thread. It aided in my decision a lot.
