Hey all

So I am a recently new PC gamer having built my PC a few months ago....and Ive had nothing but problems so far!

My parts are -

CPU - AMD 7600x
GPU - AMD 9070xt
Motherboard - Asus Rog Strix B650E-I
Ram - Crucial Pro DDR5 RAM 32GB Kit (2x16GB) 6000MHz CL36
SSD - Kingston NV3 NVMe PCIe 4.0 1TB
Case & PSU - Cooler Master NR200P MAX V2 Mini-ITX SFF Case - 280mm AIO Cooler, 850W SFX Gold ATX 3.0 PSU

PC is connected to my TV through HDMI.

The biggest issue I have had was where I could not even log into my machine as it kept freezing at the login screen - this was after just turning on HDR!
I think this was due to some driver issues as I installed Adrenaline and updated everything there but also downloaded drivers from the Asus website as I thought I needed those too.

I have done a full reset of the machine and reinstalled windows and now HDR is working - I only updated through windows update and adrenaline this time and I thought everything was going swimmingly.

I was playing Cyberpunk one day and workig perfectly - started it again the next day and its just tanking the FPS - I had it locked at 60fps but it was dropping to 50, 40, 30 and up and down, not running smooth at all but also the GPU power wattage was jumping up and down all over the place.

Deleted and reinstalled and working ok again - go to play last night and its doing the same thing all over again! Ive tried verifying the files which put in a 52mb update but still nothing.

These are just the 2 major issues Ive had not mentioning all the other small and annoying issues Ive had.

Is there anything else I can do or try to get things working better? Im at my wits end and have actually disconnected the machine now as its stressing me out so much! When it works its amazing but there just so many constant issues when I just want to have a game that Im wondering if its even worth it when I have my PS5 instead.

It kind of makes me think something may be running in the background and causing slow-down.

How much memory, cpu, and gpu usage are you seeing when this happens?

Do you have Steam set to update while gaming or only when not?

Have a check into what applications are running at Startup and then check if there are any that are scheduled to do scans etc.

Also, a stupid one but do you make sure you restart the PC when you are having these issues?

I need to double check CPU and GPU usage when I get to the machine again.

I only have GOG Galaxy installed with Cyberpunk and I've turned off all startup programmes apart from security and the AMD Adrenaline software.

I've used DDU to clear out all the drivers today (not in safe mode as I couldn't log in) and reinstalled again.

Ram was set to expo 2 so I changed it to expo 1.

I ran some benchmarks on Cyberpunk and it worked really well but defaults to fsr 2.1 - as soon as I get in game the FPS tanks massively up and down.

And yes have been restarting:-)

Nothing high at all - game is unplayable so I'm closing it very quickly.

Was just thinking throttling could produce this effect. I have basically the same case so I know without adequate cooling or limits things can get hot in mini ITX.

I would concentrate on trying to observe what temps and usage (ideally CPU, GPU, disk, network) are doing when you see this issue as you may be able to see what’s going on more clearly.

You could also check system logs for any errors or warnings that could show something going wrong in the background.

So I managed to do some quick testing and it seems like it's HDR again......
I thought this had been resolved after the windows reinstall but as soon as I turn it off the game runs fine again....

Temps were about 56 and 65, and GPU CPU usage seems normal, memory was at about 10gb of the 16gb available.

Really not sure what else could be causing these issues - feels like something is really wrong with my PC and it's set up somewhere.

Have you got another PSU to try? Sounds like a PSU problem to me. Also after a fresh install did you install all chipset drivers? Check gpuz your card is running at correct speed also and run a check on your SSD. Memtest wouldn't hurt also. Make sure bios up to date and load defaults.

Nope, don't have a spare PSU and frankly I'm not willing to pay any more money to get a spare one to test.

I Updated the chip sets through Adrenaline after removing everything with DDU and all up-to-date in windows update.

Cool, I will download memtest, cpuz and gpuz and also seatools to test my SSD.

Also going to check and confirm my windows version - it says it's all up to date in windows update.

It's really weird that HDR seems to be causing me so many performance issues - is there anyway to test that at all?
I bought cables that are certified and worked fine with My series X and PS5.

So I did a lot of testing this morning - ran a load of RAM test with my Ram set to auto and then expo 1 with no issues.

The cpu-z benchmark and stress test - worked fine temp went to 83 but I didn't leave it running super long.

Didn't bench or stress the GPU as there was no option to in gpu-z and finally checked my SSD with the Kingston and Seagate tools.

Everything was absolutely fine - no issues at all.

Start cyberpunk and same juddering and running really badly again......then I turn HDR off and bam! Works absolutely fine.

No idea why but HDR is the issue for some reason....so it's turned completely off now.

On another note my TV source is set as PC now and it seems the colours and the blacks are so much more vibrant and better so losing HDR hasn't actually made it look worse as this source type looks pretty amazing.

All set up with everything downloaded again now so will see how I go, thanks for your help!

I don't have a HDR compatible monitor so I've never personally used it, but doing a cursory search for these issues, it seems like HDR is not really a mature tech right now with numerous compatibility issues and stability issues both in windows and in games like Cyberpunk. So HDR being the problem is a good first guess given what you've said.

As for your original windows freeze at login, this could be related to known issues with Auto HDR which is a feature windows have to attempt to convert regular SDR sources to HDR, it's been known to both freeze windows and cause numerous compatibility issues with applications by interfering with their output. You would be best off disabling this first and letting applications themselves decide the HDR settings:

Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
Scroll down to Default settings or Custom settings for applications.
Toggle Auto HDR off.
Restart your PC.

HDR doesn't look like a single coherent standard right now, it differs wildly between models of TV and monitor, it differs in the quality and configuration of the applications that output HDR, Cyberpunk is known for having a multitude of issues with HDR over the years that have been fixed for some by changing HDR modes in the graphics settings (there should be several to test), sometimes it's been a display issue where doing things like moving from a variable refresh rate to a fixed one has solved the problem. If you have any software that records the screen like is built into modern drivers, sometimes disabling this can help (AMDRecord).

HDR does come with some performance hit as the GPU has to internally render the game differently, how much performance depends on the HDR standard you're using. Generally speaking what you want to do is ensure you're using the same standard across all your hardware (components, cables and TV) as mismatching HDR standards is a common cause for issues. I would recommend seeing if you can learn what standards your TV supports, what it does when it auto detects a connected PC, can you force its settings to use a specific HDR standard. And then tweak in game graphics options to match the TV. I think AMD are pushing for HDR10+ due to performance issues, this should be supported in the game menu, if not you can set an override specifically in the driver apps control panel depending on what your display supports.

Ideally let the game decide by using it's menus, overrides in graphics drivers/apps are usually a last resort.
