Hi Guys and Gals,

My Grandad did have a lovely lawn, lush green and not patchy at all.

Around about a year ago, it got some really dense and thick moss, and it didn't look good at all. It was amongst all the grass (mainly near the a apple tree and shaded areas).

I have noticed the lawn is extremely damp. with very little drainage. As mentioned, it's shaded by 2 large Conker trees.

We have treated the moss, and it got rid of it fine, but now there is a mass of dead grass and earth (raked the moss as best as we can).

So, question is? What is the best grass seed or treatments that can be used? The patches are around 50cm x 50cm each, with about 5 of them.

My Grandad takes great pride in his gardening, but lawns isn't he forte.

Thanks for any input,

Jake

When is the best time to plant grass? And with that Amazon thing, do you just throw it down on the ground, water it now and then, wait a bit, and then you'll have a lawn?

My Grandad has two tubs of that, and he said he was going to take it back, but if it says it you can it on concrete, it must be able to grow everywhere else :)

Spike the grass so the water can escape, with something like this:

if you don't have one of these -- spike it with your garden rake (about 4 inches deep)

Apart from that -- the two trees are taking the light from the grass, and the neutrients from the soil. A regular sprinkling of fertilizer will solve the nutrient problem .. as for the light .. well .. not too much beyond 'chop the trees down' will solve that ..

How did you treat the moss? Our back lawn is full of it.

Moss loves damp and shade. I usually use a weed and feed mixture to kill the moss/weeds etc, then use the scarifier to remove the dead moss/weeds a week later.

It's just a case of re seeding the patchy area's that have been left when you removed the moss.
