Yea, Googling commands is pretty much what I did when I started out. Eventually you learn what each bit of a command means and slowly learn to work it out for yourself :)

hehe I am a noob too, ubuntu is ace as it has a lot of drivers/programs etc already installed or very easy to hand.

I tried Arch install once and had to print of a 100+ page guide. In my haste I skipped a step and fooked it up. I did get gnome installed and logged into the GUI. So I classed that as a win :)
