I have a MSI B450 Pro Carbon AC motherboard that supports both wifi and lan. Im on virgin media 100mb internet currently, and through wifi im getting around 100mb speeds (test done on ookla speedtest) and im getting those level of speeds consistently which is great.

However, I prefer to use ethernet as its simply just better in every way, but for whatever odd reason im only getting around 50mb speeds??? This makes absolutely no sense to me, even on my older pc i was getting 100mb+ through ethernet, yet on this new build i cant get anything over 80mb at the absolute max????

I have tried updating the drivers, and even tested it back to back comparing ethernet and wifi, and the wifi speeds seem to always be higher. I have a feeling it could be the ethernet cable im using, but even on the cable it says its gigabit speed verified so i really have no idea why its so much slower than the wifi speeds im getting?

please can someone help

Check your LAN Utility.

I had exactly the same problem on my device a few years ago, and for some reason, the Killer K1 network adapter utility had been set to 50Mb.

Where’s the setting for that?

I’ll have to take a look into that, that may be the problem possibly. It basically maxxed out at 80-82mb and wouldnt go past it even though my wifi was going past 100 very comfortably

How would I go about checking that?

I don’t have a Windows device to hand (*nix ftw) but basically right click the network icon by your clock, go into network settings / network and sharing centre, and click Ethernet. If you’re on an older version of Windows go into Network Adapters and right click your Ethernet adapter and choose status.

Thanks, I think its on good speed now! The duplex was set to 100mb when it should have been gigabit

Make sure it is on full duplex as well - some have separate options such as 100Mbit half and 100Mbit full and others have a separate duplex setting.

Happy to help. It's usually the simple stuff that leaves us scratching our heads... Too 'obvious' to think of. :D

Yep, frustrating tbh! :D but glad its all back to normal now, just weird it wasnt set like that at default

Yes I made sure of that! Though what exactly is the difference?

If all the physical infrastructure is the same as before you can probably rule out a dodgy cable, though a quick look over won't hurt.

Unless you've made the change to set it to 100, it would always be on Auto which is what I always leave them on.
