Really weird RAM problem

Hi guys, so I have an Athlon 6000+ system which:

- won't boot with four sticks of Corsair XMS2 fitted.

- will boot with each stick of XMS2 installed individually.

- will boot with any two or three sticks of XMS2 installed.

- will boot with two sticks of XMS2 and two sticks of G.Skill DDR2 installed.

Also note that all of the sticks of RAM passed 4 extended passes of memtest.

I am completely dumbfounded by this. I simply can't understand :p

So you've swapped everything apart from the CPU. Well, then it has to be the memory controller showing it's age. The memory controller is built into the CPU, so the only way to fix it is probably replace the whole CPU or try more memory voltage.

Perhaps. However, the issue of the system locking up has now gone away, and after re-seating the RAM a fair few times and cleaning the connectors, it has booted multiple times with the four sticks of XMS2 installed :)

A step in the right direction!

I now just need to set the RAM speed to the correct ones (667/675) in the BIOS and hope it remains fine. (defaulted to 533)
 
All seems to be sorted now :confused:

So it looks like it was the board after all. But I don't know why I had all that problem with the RAM in this board before if behaved itself... :rolleyes:

Had some trouble with my P4 system the other day (been putting together all my old systems out of the parts I had boxed up recently) - Anyway, it wouldn't post, sounding one long beep on startup. I fixed it by booting up without the VGA cable plugged in, and then plugging it in after it had posted. It worked fine starting up normally after that one time... :p

Certainly getting a-lot of weird problems.

My 8800GTS and my 9700 Pro both caught fire when I tested them too. What fun :D

The P4 system has been abused horribly in its lifetime :D It spent most of its life strung together out-of-case on a shelf with no TIM under the CPU cooler :p

Everything else has been taken care of/stored properly though.

Not sure why the GPU's blew up on me :(
 
Glad you got it sorted. Makes me wonder if my spare am3 board which only 1 of the slots works just needs reseating a few times.

You never know, give it a go :)

I wouldn't be too hopeful if three of the slots don't seem to work though im sorry to say :rolleyes:
