Try downloading the latest Realtek driver for your board from Asus's site may be?

On the sidenote: do you realise you can installing your Soundblaster Z into the spare PCI-E x16 slot at the bottom? It doesn't necessarily need to be installed into the x1 slot.

It wont fit I dont think Marine , but I'll give it a look anyway :)
Unless there are USB cable from the case connected to the motherboard's headers etc are in the way and physically blocking, there should be no reason why the soundcard (or any other x1 devices/hardware) wouldn't work on the x16 slot.

I have a Xonar DX installed on the x16 slot of mini-itx board for one of the PC at home and it works perfectly.

Well the only slot thats free that i can get to is the one above the primary gpu slot , but as the sound card has a shroud on it i cant use it ..cos if i take the shroud off....the bracket comes off too

The Asus MAXIMUS VII HERO board should have a black colour x16 slot at the very bottom...you haven't got anything installed on that slot at the moment have you?

What I have been trying to explain is that hardware with the "short PCI-E x1 insert" can be installed into the "long X16 PCI-E x16" slot.

PCI-E x1 device will work in both x1 (short) and x16 (long) PCI-E slot.

Yeah Marine you're right :)...but as the two lighting cards are rather thick when it comes to the coolers on them they take up 2.5 slots each which sadly leaves only one slot free

In that case it cannot be helped.

Guess you'd have to try and see if there are any driver update on Asus's site for your board then.
