Rearranged Case Fans = Massive GPU Temperature Reduction

System spec as per my signature. Case fans were set up with one side exhaust and one top exhaust. The CPU liquid cooler provided a rear exhaust and the PSU also exhausted to the rear. In the current warmer weather I was seeing GPU temperatures peaking at 90oC but typically sitting around 80-83oC during a game of BF4. Case fans were both at full speed.

Decided to reconfigure the case fans today - just to see what difference it would make. I simply took the side exhaust fan and installed it at the front of the case as an inlet fan (keeping it at full speed) and reduced the top exhaust fan to the mid speed setting.

I then played a few rounds of BF4 to be sure I had generated some heat and was amazed to find the GPU temperature had levelled out at a maximum of 68oC; a reduction of 12-15oC compared to the previous typical temperatures.

Feeling very pleased with the result.

Very nice results, so don't you have side fan at all now?
Maybe before the side fan was sucking to much air out the case and starving the gpu of cool air.

Correct no side fan; I suspect you are right especially with the top fan as well. I think the top and side fans were competing with each other and not enough air was getting in to the case.

Weird set up, front should have an intake fan, rear obviously exhaust but the extra fans on top should exhaust and side fan should intake to blow over Mobo and GPU's esp if SLI/Crossfire.

I have found that the 290 Gaming Editions benefit from having a side fan blowing on them rather than exhausting. Got similar temperature reductions on my phantom 410 by changing the side exhaust to an intake!

Even without arrows the sticker with specs and where you can peel back to add some oil is the exhaust side of fan.

If you look at side fan from outside case and can see that sticker on hub its wrong way round for an intake.

I use my 290 Gaming in a lian li 105 with inverted motherboard. 2 x 140mm blowing straight onto the fans then one side exhaust, doesn't go above 63c :)

I have space in my Node 804 just under the Sapphire 290 Pro Tri-X oc to add two intake fans, would it make much difference even though the 290 has 3 fans?

I couldn't add a front intake fan adjacent to the card as the Sapphire 290 will only fit if the front fan is removed.

i love playing with fans. :D

the big plastic tubs you put under beds i have x2 of them full of fans different makes & sizes,
