So I have not used my pc In over a year and now I am gonna completely upgrade it.
From memory it has a 2500k @4.6 to 4.8 with 16 or 32 gb ram ( think it was 4 x 8gb sticks)

Well now I'm either looking at an i7 8700k or else one of the new chips when they get released.
But I have a few questions to ask.
1. If I get a i7 8700k now and then decide I want to get one of the new chips, with it mean I will have to change both the mb and the ram from what I would need to run the i7 8700k.?
2. I take it that the cpu socket and ram that I have for Current 2500k set up will be no good to use on the i7 8700k if I went down that route ??

I'm sure the 8th generation chips need an lga 1151v2 socket and won't work on older boards with an old lga 1151 socket.

Boards that support the 8th gen chip will also probably only support ddr4 ram too.

8th and 9th gen chips will use the same socket/mobo/memory (possibly excluding the beefier i9s which could need the new chipset).

It's likely we're staying on DDR4 for a couple more years.

Thank you for the help :)
I'll probably be going with one of the beefier i9s as long as they are now stupidly priced like nvidia done with the RTX series
